      Tell me about growing hair

This is my second attempt. Last time I gave up because everyone was pressuring me to cut my hair. And it wasn't even long! This time I'm more serious about doing it and it has a reason. I think I'm slowly getting bald, it's still small and not so noticable, but my hair has retreated a little. And whole my life I was cutting my hair to "number 2" haircut, so I think it's the last train to catch before I'm forced to shave my head.

Currently my hair is nearly looking like a mess. First, it's of the same lenght everywhere. I have wavy hair and while I think it'd look cool long, at this lenght it's just creating problems, such as growing in weird directions, mostly straight from the sides. I try to make it decent enough but I'm running out of ideas because it's getting more and more resistant to the blowdryer and combs. So I need help and ideas. I don't know how to use gel or have any idea what to do with it. Some suggested cutting my hair (ok, many did) but I have no idea what to tell to the hair dresser, in what way to cut it so that it doesn't... impair my attempt to grow it lol.

I hope I don't sound confusing. Also, I have very oily hair and have to wash it every second day.

You should wash it every day if it's so oily, washing it every other day won't do. Also, try a different shampoo/conditioner. I've had times where I bought a brand that made my hair all frizzy and messy. Also, you can straighten it while it's still mid-length so that it won't be everywhere. You can just tell your hair dresser that you want to cut it so that you will be able to grow it long. You can also just go to get it trimmed every once in awhile, it helps your hair grow more even if you're having trouble with it. You also said you use a comb? Try a brush, they don't pull on your hair as much.

My best advice would be to straighten it, and wash it real good every day. That, and get it trimmed occasionaly if you're having trouble.

Well, the thing is it doesn't really get oily before the second day close to the time I washed it. Also many people I talked to thought that every second day is too often. And yes, I guess I'll have to go to the hair dresser in the end, I just hoped I could postpone it a little more. I'll try remembering to use the brush, it is a lot easier and thanks for the tips.

If you wash it every day then, it won't get oily in the first place. It's better to keep it clean than to wait for it to get dirty and then clean it.

Some people you talk to think washing it every second day is too often? Psshht, they probably don't have long hair. Wash it every day.

Long hair for guys is definitely harder to manage than short hair. You've got to maintain it, you've got to comb it the right way, you've got to do EVERYTHING to it to keep it looking good. Then some people just don't look good with long hair.

When I started growing my hair out again from earlier this year, I too had to go through a transitional phase when it looked like shit. Once I got out of that phase, it looked pretty good. The thing is, eventually this period of cool hair will pass and I will have to cut it. When I cut it, it will not look the same as it does now, so I can't just go in and get a trim. Very tricky. I'm sure I could account for this if I formed my hair by artificial means, but I'd rather not have to worry about it

Yeah, that weird phase is probably the hardest part about growing hair. For me it's whenever it's getting in your eyes and you have to part it, but it looks stupid parted. Just stick through it, mysterious dreamer, it will look better when it's long.

You could just comb it to the side, giving the fringe look. It's pretty popular now-a-days and doesn't look half-bad.

I don't know about the OP, but you should cut your hair. Really.

Your replies make me sad. I asked how to make it look less stupid and you all say I can't and need to wait till it grows out to look less stupid.

I don't see why I shouldn't wear it in a pony tail, aside from being "gay". Really, it's just easier to manage this way.

Washing your hair every day is not good for it though. It can do damage
and will eventually dry it out. Google should spit out some stuff about this.

I'd say go to a hair salon and tell them, you want the edges to be cut, so
you can grow it longer without it curling up. And then, as mentioned, I'd
say try out a few different shampoos or conditioners.

I've been washing my hair every day with shampoo and conditioner since I was about 7. D:

As for growing out hair, I suggest trying to go for a medium style hair-do, so that it doesn't look too *stupid* and then change looks as you progress further.
      There's styles for every length.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

Well, each individual case is different.
It can be bad for it.

I suppose, just try stuff out, until you found yours.

Everyone is different, if he's having problems with his hair getting really greasy, he should wash it every day. Some people can go every other day, but some people also need to wash it every day. If I don't wash my hair one day, it gets really greasy and disgusting. The idea that everyone can go a day without washing their hair is stupid, that's only for some people.

I don't care if you think it looks gay or straight.

      (It's a joke, son)
I don't style mine, I simply wake up and brush it. Let it hang loose, you know.
