      Tell Me About Boxing

I was thinking of getting into boxing and I would like to get into it, I am 16 years old 190 pounds, 5' 8", a little muscular but would like to gain more and lose some fat in the process. My mother is a little worried but I would like some more information about it to convince and and also I was wondering if it would be a good idea, thanks.

EDIT: I also have very broad shoulders, and a muscular upper body

It's a great sport for what you have in mind. And, as long as you don't compete, it's a safe sport. Boxing is all about developing proper movement and footwork, that way it becomes even safer.
A good instructor will make sure you master proper technique before letting you work on the heavy bag or spar.

And yes, you will get hit in the process of learning how to box but it shouldn't be to hard. If you see people get hurt (knocked out/down) in practice regularly, find another gym.

Fingertip and knuckle pushups are your way to avoiding broken hands, fingers and wrists.

Skipping rope will help you develop footwork, coordination and conditioning.

It's helpful to have big upper body strength, but powerful legs and hips are equally (if not more) important in boxing. Powerful punches and explosive movements all come from the calves, thighs, hams and hips.

Good articles, mostly on conditioning for boxing:

And an exercise highlight to motivate you:

Certainly. All jokes and bias aside, boxing is a great sport/activity/martial art to get into. Very practical to use in real life scenarios as well.

Yeah and I'm looking for a close gym but I can't really find one in my area. (Northern California, Bay Area). And I'd still have to convince my mother.

Mind you, generally they give you helmets to wear when you are sparring. So even if you do get smoked you might not get ko`d

boxing is a good sport. You MUST find a boxing gym to practice. Also get in shape before you go to the gym. Do A LOT of calisthenics. Also, do alot of running. Try to run in heavier shoes becuase they provide greater protection and its like a weight on your foot. You should try and find a gym where there are enough trainers for boxers. Make sure you study up on who the guy has trained. If he trains losers, than you will become one. Make sure the gym has all of the essentials too, speed bag, heavy bag, double end bag, one wall should be mirrored for shadow boxing. There also, surprisingly, has to be a ring in the gym. you should be fine but make sure you don't go to a gym where there are 1 way fights happening and one man is just beating the shit out of another in sparring. I bet you'll be an inside fighter. I'm 15, 6"3 and a very scary 170lbs and i'm starting to box now, so I know whats goin on.
