Yeah apparently, in Korea anyway, it's the most common surgery. Often parents will pay for their kids' surgeries as a birthday gift. Hospitals have students discounts for this, too.

Double eye-lid surgury is the most common cosmetic procedure in Japan as well, with japanese women being the greater number to have this done. Non-incisional is the technique of choice.

It's pretty ridiculous, but at least it's less radical and invasive than a lot of things people get done.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I think it is pretty radical Taosaur! It's as if they are ashamed... there seems to be no other reason. I don't understand how one is more beautiful than the other!?

That could be it, but why, then, are so many people becoming accepting of transsexual operations? Is that not the same thing? Someone trying to be something they're not by attempting to artificially alter what nature gave them to work with? I know I'm kind of comparing apples to oranges by comparing racial issues to gender issues, but it all amounts to the same reasoning. If you can look an Asian in the eye and tell them that their eyes are fine just the way they are - and that to change them would be silly - why, then, is it considered so insensitive to tell those wanting to get a sex change the same thing about their born gender? Is one somehow more socially acceptable than the other? If so, then what a topsy-turvy world we live in.

Sorry about the off-topic rant, but I'm of the staunch mindset that either A) we should all be proud of what we are instead of trying be something we're not, or B) we should all be able to change whatever the fuck we please about our appearance without any discrimination or scrutiny whatsoever.

That be my two cents, take it or leave it.

^ Sex operations are different because people undergoing them are attempting to match their outside to how they feel on the inside. A man feels like he is a woman but doesn't look like one, so he wants to have an operation to change that and be in harmony with himself, inside and out.

But I doubt an Asian woman ever feels like she's a white woman on the inside.

Regardless, there's still a great deal of...you know, falsity involved, a grave lack of genuineness to say the least. At least with these eyelid operations, it's a step in the "right" (if you can call it that) direction; in the end, things change neither for the better nor for the worse. It's just a change. But transsexual operations are, any way you look at them, genital mutilation. They neither look nor operate like the real thing, and where's the genuineness in that?

Well, I can't speak for individuals who would want to undergo a sex change operation, but I think in their minds mutilated genitals that somewhat resemble the sex they're going for is better than doing nothing. Like, I'm a woman and I think I'd rather have a weird pseudo-vagina than a penis.

I think I can see the point you're trying to make, but I think the two situations are just too different...

Thanks for the vid Jeff. That was interesting. I didn't really like how pushy Tyra was. It seems like she was trying to project her own internal insecurities onto that girl.

Now that I think about it, I also disagree with the doc when he said that nose and eyelid surgeries are equivalent to boob jobs and lypo. I think the latter two are quite rare when compared to the first two. Nearly everyone in Asia gets their eyelids done, whereas my friends and family and their friends and family would all freak out if someone we knew got a boob job.

Yeah I agree with that. Although I come into contact every now and then with people who look quite strange with slightly botched eyelid jobs. I pity the whole situation in those cases.

Anyway it seems to me that most Asians are perfectly aware that the rest of the world likes their look or doesn't even think to prefer one over the other. But, it's definitely true that most Asians prefer this look on one another.

You're definitely right about that. Tyra has a "gift" for asserting herself and her opinions on people whenever she wants. But really...I don't understand the eyelid surgery. Honestly, I think it comes down to being insecure about yourself and wanting to look like western beauty. My same thoughts are about people who get boob jobs. Though I like bigger breasts, I'm much more attracted to women who have A cups over a woman with fake DD's . It's just something that speaks out about a person who's willing to go under the knife to "adjust" themselves to what society deems physically attractive (or so they think). I just...don't get why people aren't happy with how they naturally look. >_<

Fake boobs look fake, and I think they are unattractive. Small and natural beats the Hell out of big and fake.

That is how it works with silicone, at least. I hear saline can cause the natural look to remain, but I'm not sure. Silicone definitely sucks, even on Carmen Electra.

While I'm at it, I don't like fake lips or eye/face adjustments either. All of this plastic surgery glam stuff has got to go. It is terrible.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

I agree. I think it's got to go.

But then again, if I were Asian and lived in a society with this enormous pressure to get these kinds of surgeries, I can't say that I wouldn't buckle under it. Thank goodness that the pressure to get surgery in the west isn't that great unless you're in Hollywood or something.
