      Jolting Awake!!!

I havent had this recently but before I started getting interested in lucid dreaming I would slowly dose off into sleep. With in half a minute or less I would feel like I was falling. I would Immediately jolt awake and my heart would be beating.

Would this be the hypnogogic imagery and does this happen to any of you too??

...i dont know what 'they' would call it, but this happens to me, its strange, because i will be completely relaxed for a while, then randomly, a surge of electricity will curse through my body.

I hate that! You're dozing, all peaceful-like one moment and the next you're falling off. And then, BAM, you wake up full of adrenaline, which makes it right tough to get back to sleep again. I usually ended up looking like this all night:

Falling off? I sometimes have the experience that somebody's just lifted up the matress of my bed and I'm falling off it...

Sometimes I am dosing off my brother is next to me in his bed watching tv. I jolt awake and my arms and legs kick up. He looks at me and says "damn" then he starts laughing.

When it happens to him I do the same thing.

These sound like symptoms of what is called...sleep starts...just at the onset of sleep I get an electric type of jolt that wakes me up freaked out every time it happens!..if yyou don,t know what it,s like just let me zap you with a tazer gun right after you fall asleep...almost like a mis-fire in the brain

Yeah I know what you all mean. Its like you're lying there peacefully and you may be thinking of skate boarding or something and you fall of the skateboard but somehow it just seems like you were actually doing that and you just jump up trying to break your fall..

Yeah, happens a little more often when I'm dozing off for a nap than during regular sleep. I hear it might have something to do with your body entering REM sleep too quickly.. if that's true, now I'll just need to figure out how to turn it into a WILD instead..

Hehe the nods and then the ZAP gotta hate that! though I agree it is funny to see it happen to some one else too hehe.

I wonder what it is... mebby your on to something about entering REM to quickly, though sometimes I can ZONK and wake up in the dreaming in minuts. *shrugs*

According to "The Enchanted World of Sleep" by Peretz Lavie they are called "hypnic jerk". "The muscle relaxation that signifies falling asleep is sometimes interrupted by a sudden start called a hypnic jerk for which we have no well-established explanation, although we may assume that it results from a change in the brain to decrease muscle tonus." With that being said I've had these numerous times. In fact I think I had around 4-5 last night when trying to fall asleep. I'm noticed them more now that I've been thinking about dreaming more etc.

It happens to me too, I'll be just going to sleep and in my mind I keep falling then....BOOM...I'll jolt awake.

Let's see, I started getting interested in dreams/sleep right around the week of the January 6th 2004. I'm still not sure what made me look into dreams but I'm pretty sure I had a good dream which caught my interest. At school (I’m a junior in high school) I looked up dreams/sleep at our library and got the "Enchanting World of Sleep" and a big book by Aristotle (it only had a few sections on sleep/dreams) which I haven't looked at much since lots of the theories are out dated etc. I read the “Enchanting World of Sleep” in a few days which only stuck my interest more. Almost by coincidence while on a hike with a few friends the topic of dreams etc came up and a friend that had seen waking life said we should rent it that night. We ended up getting Waking Life and watching it that night (then watching Mulholland Drive, which was my recommendation, and they fit together perfectly). I loved Waking Life and after doing a few searches on Lucid Dreaming I came up with this site. At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to lucid dream, and I’m still not positive if I do. One of the things I like about dreams is there seemly randomness, how they feel so real. Since Monday I’ve been keeping a dream record every morning and have been able to remember at least a dream per night (this is without waking up in the middle of the night etc). However lots of my recent dreams have been boring. I’ve still been keeping a record since I think there are things to be learned from dreams (like deep true feelings about someone etc) but a dream about having dinner with my grand parents (who I see a few times a month in waking life) is almost disappointing. Anyway that’s my little introduction, sorry for writing too much.

Its really funny you mention that you just out of the blue got interested because I felt like the same thing happened to me. One night I woke up several times around christmas and all of a sudden i have a vivid recollection of alot of my dream segments. Then i just went on line and started looking. I found lucid dream sights and tips on recalling dreams. Then i found this site. Have had 2 lucid dreams since. 8)

I thought I posted here but I guess not....

Anyway, I've felt it to(the falling feeling)

I thinks its awesome. Its kind of like your on a roller coaster ride and your going down the big drop. I have never experienced this during regular sleep. I only get it when Im in school and I put my head down and just relax/fall asleep. I rarely experience though

Yea, same. I'll get the uncontrollable twitch to wake me up. Its not that I do it on purpose. its more like an instinct to react when falling.

We can come to a conclusion everyone. School is a big factor in experiencing this feeling
