Not sure if mentioned yet, but I believe something important in relationship to reality checks is that you should actually do them occasionally in true reality, just for the hell of it. That will make it much more likely that you'll be inspired to do so in a dream, even if all seems normal.
The reason this is important is that it seems to create a stronger contrast between reality and the dream world and it'll most likely be more apparent when something "isn't right".

Just the mere act of questioning reality in reality from time to time can be powerful. I've only had about 10 LD's so far, but I've never made it to the point of performing a actual reality check to confirm that I was dreaming, as soon as I questioned it in the dream I just knew.
Recently, during an LD (already lucid), I noticed a newspaper and decided to see if the text really changes and wow, it definitely changes state quite drastically. The letters seemed alive and extremely dynamic.
