I don't know anything about meditation music but I can tell you how I meditate. I sit down in half lotus with my back straight. First I like to immerse myself in the present moment. I'll look around the room and listen to everything I can hear, like the fan or fish tank. I close my eyes and continue to listen to my surroundings as if they were my thoughts, completely clearing my mind of all thought. Then I let my awareness drift from the sounds to my breath and I become one with my breath, as if I am being breathed in and out. If I am meditating with the intention of self-realization I will continue to do this as my awareness begins to expand. If I am meditating with a goal or something, like "I will remember my dreams", I will do this long enough to completely silence my mind and then begin stating my goal as a mantra. I'll breathe in saying half the mantra and breathe out saying the other half. At first I'll say the mantra with audible thought. Then I let the mantra drift to the back of my mind. Then silencing the mind again I just feel the mantra with every breath. I also like to meditate on my spiritual heart, I'll start the same way until my mind is clear and then I shift my awareness to the center of my chest, our source. I focus on this are and feel this area. Great way to immerse oneself in feelings of love and bliss

      How do you meditate?
"To know one's self is to be blissful always"

"Gratitude for the present moment and the fullness of life now is true prosperity"

Try not to think of meditation as something to be mastered; it'll make your life a whole lot easier. Tibetan monks actually view meditation as a state of mind rather than a technique to be mastered.

It helps if you use your imagination a bit. When you close your eyes, simply observe your thoughts and feelings and completely disregard the existence of the outside world. Effectively, you're creating your very own mental sanctuary if you like.

I used to meditate a lot 3 or so years ago. But the most common way is just focus on your breathing and ignoring everything else. If thoughts come into your head notice that they are there, but don't force them out, just let them fade. The other way was listening to a simple drum beat, while focusing on the drum beat, i guess this is more trance. But anyhow I have gotten really deep with this method, the drum beat gets louder and the vibrations make the beats seem closer together, and even a few times i broke out of it cause the vibrations went head to toe, weird. After reading this forum it might have been me going into SP, which i had no clue what that was at the time. There are many ways to meditate, choose what works for you.

When thinking about conventional meditation I have a tendency to picture someone with eyes closed sitting cross-legged while relaxing their arms. Sometimes the meditation involves repeating a mantra and/or visualizing a setting. Other types of meditation involves controlled breathing. I experimented with visual meditation a few years ago. With visual meditation you build on your own visual thoughts and imagination, to create a scene. Did it help me sleep? It not only helped me sleep but surprisingly seemed to turbo-charge my brain's R.E.M. dreaming.

This is very well put. To me, there's "meditation" as referencing a set of practices historically used for the purpose of introspection (or however you care to describe it, that's just an easy term really). And then there's "meditation" as a practice, as a state of mind. It's a very personal thing, how one gets there and even where "there" really is - there's a lot that the idea of meditation (2nd definition) can cover, as evidenced by the numerous different techniques and types of meditation (1st definition) that there are. To me all that it really means is becoming engrossed in silent introspection. You're free to make that as little or as much, as simple or as complex, as you wish, depending on your purpose.
