I skimmed over BaKo's tut, and it seemed pretty thorough--I would say follow that. Personally what I've always done is as soon as I lay down, for like 5 to 20 minutes I repeat what it is that I want to suggest. Usually it's to wake up after each REM cycle, but the real goal is to even wake up just once (it happens kind of naturally after I wake up once though). So, I say what I've always said to try and get this to work since the very first time I tried it, "I will wake up at 3:45am." I repeat this in my mind several times and in several ways. Sometimes with speech, sometimes without (hard to explain... I try and convey the same general concept with feelings alone). If I haven't done it in a really long time, it takes about a week to get back in rhythm, but if I've been doing it steadily for a while it works almost 100% of the time. Even days where I don't feel like repeating the mantra I'll still wake up or do whatever it was I was suggesting.
