Ive tried doing something similar, I would make I knew where everything was in my room and memorize it the best I could.Just before I fall asleep, I try recount where everything is, and when I wake up, I do the same thing (in case of false awakenings).

So doing it that way prevents false awakenings (some time), and can help you become aware you are dreaming when you see stuff is out of place or missing.
