      Afraid of the Dark...

I would really love to try obtaining Lucid dreams or meditating intensly, but unfortunatly i have an intense over active imagination.

Has anyone ever had a problem with being afraid? (i'd rather not go into specifics).

IS THERE anything that can help me?

:yumdumdoodledum: :yumdumdoodledum: first of all, welcome aboard! :yumdumdoodledum: :yumdumdoodledum:

now, as for being afraid: sure, i'm afraid of lots of stuff. for instance (and i don't care how many snickers i get) i had to finally take the bloody T.V. out of my room after seeing The Ring so that i could FINALLY get some sleep. (shivers)

umm. i don't really know what to suggest. music usually helps me clear my mind of whatever is bothering me. i'd suggest something soothing and even lulling; perhaps not even music, but maybe just listening to like a cd recording of falling rain, perhaps w/ thunder? that helps me anyway. you can even mix that with a little extra music, like a harp or something.
Each new day is a chance to turn it all around.

Yea, my biggest fears are aliens, alone in the dark, and being in the ocean in general(scared of sharks). The best thing I can tell you is probably just to relax. Dont think about them. Occupy your mind with something. Or like Icedawg, just listen to some soothing music or Meditate. If somehow you do end up having a nightmare just close your eyes and hope your not viewing the dream in a 3rd point of view. Closing your eyes seems to help at least for me. Even in lucid dreams where I am terrified.

I had friends with me, but they fell asleep. It was a dvd, so when it was over the scary noises and stuff kept playing and kept repeating really freaky parts of the movie and I was too scared to get up I finally threw a pillow at the guy with the remote to wake up so he could turn it off.

I am afriad of the dark... and LOTS and LOTS of other things. But for me I keep music on and when I am dreaming I can always hear my music, so it's ok.

Ok i dont want to create another thread so here's another issue.

Reality Checks... yes i am afraid of them when it gets dark.

I figured that a REAL useful reality check would require you to suspend your knowledge that it is real life... by doing so i threw off my security blanket. "Samara is not real" ... "unless this is a nightmare... in which case..." It snowballs into my ever curious theology. "Well maybe life is a dream and ANYTHING could happen"

I mean... i'm not afraid of things killing me; i am afraid of seeing them all together. Does anyone have any help to offer? Comforting logic perhaps? Ways to combat my fears once i become Lucid? Should i pray that my demons are put peacfully put to rest, that they find "the white light" that sort of thing?

Ha, i think of every possible that that will scare me and obsess over it until it consumes me completely.

And when i see scary stuff in dreams i dont become afraid to the extent i become afraid in real life. I mean, i get REALLY afraid in real life, but whenever i see like Samara in a dream its never ever as scary.

      (additional info here)

Tell your fears they are naughty and to go pick on someone their own size. You know, a lot smaller!

im my LD's with monsters and whatnot, I chase them as fast as I can. It is fun, and once you are in an LD you KNOW it is a dream so even if you don't have control it is ok.

Best way to get rid of a fear is face it. I was afraid of heights... more like terrified. then I decided to bungee jump. Now they just make me uneasy, but at least I'm not afraid.

I used to sleep with the light on for a very very long time. It wasn't untill i was finding the lamps light being too bright for me that i began to sleep in the dark, and when i did sleep in the dark at first i would see swirling patterns n stuff.

My advice is to sleep with the door shut if you don't already - its safer if there is a fire downstairs anyway. In fact this one time when i was real little i had some real bad dream and i must have been hot or ingested something toxic because i woke up, the door was open and i saw for several seconds a classic 'sheet' ghost like you see in comics. Following that i was severely hallucinating and saw faces on the walls & any where i looked. Never slept with the door open after that!

Also sleep with your head under the quilt with your face exposed to keep cool - i used to do that thinking it would stop vampires biting my neck in my sleep. Place your bed if you can next to a wall and sleep facing it, otherwise you occasionally wake up and scare yourself with remainent imagery of your dreams. It gives a greater sense of a smaller room which makes me at least feel safer. There no way i could sleep in a large room *ever*

LOL! I sleep with the blanket pulled up all the way to my head, too, for the same reason.

Also, I always sleep in a position in which I can see the door; whenever it's pitch black and my back's to the door I get a very strong uneasy feeling.

i used to sleep with my door open as a kid, becuase it made me feel like I was closer to my parents. I can't ever sleep in a bed without a blanket because i feel like it's unsafe. As if a monster couldn't get me if my blanket was over me. No matter how hot it was, I always have a blanket over me.

I agree with the reluctance of sleeping in a large room. It's like, opposite clausterphobic (sp?). I sleep best when i'm in the bottom of a bunk bed.

Yeah, my blanket is more for security than warmth...even in summer i cover up all the way to my chin...everyone knows that there's no way a monster can get you if you're under the covers!

As for the dark itself, yes, it is unsettling for me. it is an evolved fear i suppose - i'm not concerned with nightlights and the like...it's not that simple. Ever since i was a young child i've had a very overactive imagination to say the least. it's like i'm convinced something is out to get me - i'm constantly looking over my shoulder and watching my back, often with my back to a wall...depending on my level of awareness...sometimes i'm completely indulged in something and surprise myself, once i come-to, how unaffected i was for a moment.
i'm just in my own little world...

Theres actually nothing to be afraid of in the dark. Think about it when you're in a well lite area close your eyes and there you have it darkness but does that make you scared? No why because its all in your mind. "There is nothing to fear but fear itself.."

      Lights on

Somtimes fear comes from not understanding somthing. The more you talk about a fear and learn what it really is, the fear will subside.
kalmalH has a good point too. face your fears. But that is easier said than done.

I used to imagine that lots of things were waiting in the dark, like the zombies from resident evil or sometimes old hag. But then one night, I was like, "Wtf am I scared of, I'm the one in control here!" Ever since then, whenever my mind starts to picture something there, I just take control of my mind and clear it.

So the moral of this story, is don't read about old hag or play resident evil late at night.
