Tangible Object Reality Checks: Do they work?

For the past 3 months I've been very lazy with my lucid dreaming; losing interest from time to time. I heard of a RC technique which piqued my interest, and I wanted to read other people's experiences with it. I don't know the proper name, so let's just call them TORC's (Tangible Object Reality Checks)

Basically, every waking moment you carry a small object in your pocket, and when you do an RC you check for that. This reminds me to some degree of inception, where the main character has a small spinning top, and when he is dreaming it doesn't stop spinning (Or something like that).

At first this sounded really nifty! I have plenty of little trinkets I could carry around with me! But then a thought occurred to me. If every time you do an RC (3-7 times per day) wouldn't at some stage it could become such a set occurrence in your life that it would get simulated in dreams?

I'm really curious about this, and I'm definitely gonna give it a go.

That kinda is the point of reality checks. To carry them over to dream. Repetition helps, but what helps the most is the feeling you have when touching the object. The "holy cow, what if this is a dream? I better check." While doing this, you must believe, that yes, you are in a dream.

Then this startling feeling will transfer itself into your regular dreams and give you an urge to RC. But by the time you RC, you pretty much already know you are lucid.

Should be entirely possible, you just need to expect them to not be there or be different whenever you do that kind of reality check, i guess.

Edit: And like gab said, emotional factor is important too.

Actually i think this could work.. but i think maybe something like a watch would work more, just so when someone asks what time it is, they time will be radical. that is just my opinion though.
Btw in Inception it wasn't really his spinning top that was his Dream totem, it was his wedding ring. but yea they lead you to believe it is the top.

This is interesting. I wonder if it is possible via repetition to make the Object assume different properties in the dream? For example, the object may be solid and dense in reality, but when you are lucid if you were to dream control it into assuming a different colour and physical characteristic would its dream characteristics stay consistent?
