Dreams so real it's hard to believe reality checks

Last night I was dreaming, and the dreams were so amazingly real that i did not want to believe my reality checks. It was just amazing.

The incredible thing is, that I was talking to my family about lucid dreaming and about reality checks. Then, I decided to demonstrate to them the finger through the palm reality check. Now I was 100% certain that I was in the real waking life. WRONG. After pushing a little bit, my finger went through my hand like my hand was rubber. Now I was really confused, because there was no way in hell I was dreaming. Or was I?

If I hadn't haphazardly done that reality check, i never would have known I was dreaming because there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.

Has anyone had this happen? Where you don't want to believe your reality checks?

Can't say that I have. The only time I ever remember to do RCs in my dreams is when I'm already fairly certain that I'm dreaming, so it never comes as a surprise.

I had a similar experience myself just last night .I had a false awakening and the bedroom lights wouldn't work .I immediately recognised that as a dream sign so I checked my watch and clock to be certain and sure enough the numbers made no sense . I tried to float as a reality check but couldn't . This puzzled me as I was sure that in a dream I should be weightless but I could definitely experience gravity .Then when I looked carefully round the room I was so sure it had something I believed in my dream to be called 'the true quality of waking reality ' that I decided that this wasn't a dream after all and so I missed an excellent chance of LDing .

Well, it happens to me sometimes too!
I hypothetise that you dont realise you dream..not because it seems so real but because you have low lucidity that moment. That means that when you see your hand passing through something...you perveive it as normal because you have low lucidity.

Low lucidity syptoms, are for ex. that you realise you are dreaming but you cant convince yourself you really do!

Last night seemed to provide the answer to my previous nights failed RCs . I was in a non LD suddenly I was lifted into the air as if someone was pulling my sweater from behind . I immediately realised this was a dream sign and did some RCs .I looked at my hands as this always worked for me before . But this time nothing changed ,as hard as I stared at them they just looked normal. However I couldnt ignore the fact that I was floating a foot off the floor ,I decided to do another RC and pushed my finger into my palm . It felt spongey and penetrated my flesh about an inch so now I'm sure I am dreaming ,however I dont want to do anything embarassing so I do a third check
(I have read about it here and people say it always works for them but this is the first time I remembered to try it .)
I hold my nose and I try to breath through my ears , try this for several seconds but can't breathe,I am gasping for breath as I would be in waking life . So that particular RC definitely doesn't work for me . However one thing is clear to me . the previous night's missed dream signs were the build up to the LD last night . It sems to be a cycle that I get "near misses" for a couple of nights before a full LD .

If you're floating in the air, you don't need to do reality checks...

But lets think about the Dream itself for a moment. Do you ordinarily talk to your family about your dreams and the techniques you use within them?

Most families are so close, and not always in a positive way. Any information you give to people with whom you live at close quarters, may come back to be thrown in your face as teasing or ridicule. Many people do not tell their families anything that they will not find out for themselves in any case.

Perhaps that should be a dream sign -- if one finds oneself opening up and confiding in one's family, then it must be a Dream.

When I told my family about LDing they all told me that they had been lucid at least once. In fact my younger brother is now getting into Dreamviews too. I'm trying to convince as many people as possible to find out about this site because it's such a fun thing to do that takes almost no time. It's one of very few things that you can do while you sleep

So, for me, I don't think confiding in my family would work as a reality check, but maybe some people could use it, whenever they are talking about LDing do a RC, might work...

Yeah, actually I do talk to them about it, and it was that same weekend I happened to have this dream.

      Jumping RC

This one time I dreamed that I was walking around town, and it felt 100% real. I did a RC, which was another thing that made me think it was real because i never remember to do them while dreaming. I looked around and everything looked fine, so I humored myself and tried to jump a little bit. As I jumped, I went flying into the air and then came back down to the ground again. I still didn't really believe it was a dream, I thought something really strange had just happened in real life and maybe I had became a superhuman without knowing it, but then I thought about it and realized I was dreaming. So I went off to do some cool lucid stuff, but lost it really quickly. But I thought it was cool that someone else still didn't want to believe it was a dream after an RC like I did, because that dream felt so real.
Why does the eye see more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?

Actually a few nights ago the same thing happened ...
My friends were like you know Jon...you could be dreaming right now...
And I was like nope I am not but thanks anyway...
but than later than night I was dreaming and they were doing it again....
this time I did a reality check....I ussually just shoot something out of my hand or something..
but yea it was really difficult and weird that it happened in Reel ality and than in a dream...
I hope Freddy Kruger comes into my dreams one day so I can Fuck him up bad!

Do these lucid dreams actually feel like something like reality, or is it a deja vu type of thing, where you just remember them as feeling like reality?

From what I've read a high level lucid dream is like being completely conscious inside your dream, with a realistic sense of space, dynamic use of senses, etc, but accounts of lucid dreams always seem like all your cognitive abilities aren't in play.

For example, going lucid, but frequently lapsing back into non-lucidity, or doing reality checks while floating in air, only to conclude that you aren't dreaming. I've done these before, and the lack of reliable intelligence in dreams is always humorous. So, how do you know that the "reality" you remember from your dreams isn't just a skewed waking point of view? I've had dreams I remember as being quite realistic, but in retrospect I don't remember a single "physical" sensation in them worth re-telling, besides simple things that pop in and out randomly, like the feeling of "wind".

I'm not trying to sound like a skeptic as I am interested in lucid dreaming, but the experience I've had going lucid in dreams before doesn't give much hope for the same quality of lucid dreams I hear given on various sites. Here's hoping it's worth the effort!
