      Why didn't I become lucid?

I haven't started doing reality checks etc yet because I've only worked on my dream recall for the last few months. Still, I've had a couple of low-lucid LDs just by sheer luck I guess.

Anyway, last night I had this dream in which I was washing my hands in the bathroom. All of a sudden I hear a friggin beep from my hands. "What the heck?".

Now, I've read about a RC technique recently where you read something, look away for a while, and read it again. If it's a dream the text should change.

So because of the beep I was suspecting that I was dreaming. I found a name tag embroidered on a towel, so I read it slowly, looked away for a few seconds, and then read it again. It said the same thing, and after that I didn't remember anything more and I woke up.

Now, have I misunderstood this technique, or why didn't it work?

You haven't misunderstood this technique, the results just vary from person to person.

For some people all characters in a dream are jumbled and screwed the f**k up unable to be read and made sense of, and for others they're exactly the same as reality.

its all to do with doubts in your mind on whether or not your dreaming, and if that would actually happen in a dream.

Dont worry about it, just try a different method.

You don't necessarily need to try a new technique yet.
A good thing to do is to read something first, and then look back and envision it has changed. For example if the towel you read said something like "100% cotton; Made in Taiwan" when you look away from the tag and look back, imagine that it now says "250% Woven Childrens laughter; Made in unicorn land" or something completely rediculous and out of the ordinary.
If it does change you know you're dreaming, if not you may still be but it is less likely.
The difference between just reading it and looking back to see if it has changed and this is that this way you're actively trying to change the dream, and not leaving it up to your doubts to do so.

You still have to believe it will change otherwise there's less chance it will change, if any.

The thing is thats the same thing Xtenzion has been trying already. But in his/her case instead of believing the writing will say something else, he/her instead believes that it will appear to be unreadable, or just weird... Its the same thing.

I suppose theres a chance it could work though, but like i said its to do with doubts, so......errm......good look xtenzion.

Beeping hands sounds like a perfectly good dream sign as well as RC.

Several moths ago, I had the most vivid Lucid Dream of all and that was before I knew the name for them or ways to practice or anything. In fact I was quite worried I was going mad, but I knew I would wake up in a glorious mood and full of life and energy. In that last dream which came about 3 or 4 weeks after the previous, I was so excitied that I tried to make a mental note of everything I came across to savour the next day. One of the items was the number (lcence) plate of a bus which I made a huge effort to memorise (and I looked back at it and it was the same). I suspect this is because I wasn't expecting it to change. Also there was a town with a shop which attracted my attention. I read the sign over the shop. Later on I came across another branch of the shop in a different town and it read the same. Or at least I think it did. Again, I wasn't expecting it to change.

The really annoying thing of all though was it was the most vivid and clear and controllable dream, yet on waking I forgot all the details instantly that I was so desparate to remember and had made such an effort to remember

Now I know things may change they probably will do

I got the impression that he just read it carefully, looked away and then looked back. He never stated that he had any expectations of what it would change to. I was saying that if you give yourself an expectation of what it will change to, it has more chance of changing to that.
It's pretty much corollary to what you are trying to say about doubting it will change. If you believe it won't change, nothing will change.
