      Do people actually use RC's?

I recently had my first 2 LD's and I didn't RC at all. I've never rememebred to RC in a dream. At some point during the dream I've just gone, "Hey, I'm dreaming!" I didn't even do a RC after gaining lucidity, I just knew I was dreaming. I find this to be easier, as I don't usually even remember to RC after gaining lucidity haha, let alone before I gain it.....
so, do RCs actually work for anybody out there?

Sure they do. The idea is to make a habit out of doing a RC every time a certain event happens. Like whenever you enter your bedroom or whenever you see yourself or a certain person. Then this habit should carry over to your dreams, making you realize you're dreaming.
I usually just do it whenever I think about it, and so far it's gotten me lucid once. ^.^

      Hi Pete.
RCs are actually meant to be done on a conscious level. While you are awake.(when you perform one in a dream, it will soon be on a conscious level)
When you perform these reality checks in an unwavering & consistent manner the more prone you are to the RC scenario coming up in your dream.
So if you are already lucid dreaming, there is obviously no reason to do an RC.
Is is to check to see if you are dreaming. Believe me. It is pretty surprising when you are fairly convinced that you are not in a dream, and upon doing a reality check you find that you are.

If you don't perform RC when you become Lucid you are more likely to loose lucidity and continue with your normal dream. I regularly have FAs so I always RC whenever I wake up, the majority of the time I haven't woken up at all.
RCs are one of the most valuable tools I have come accross. I wouldn't have had half the number of lucid dreams without them.
      Are you dreaming or awake?

For me, I usually do not attain lucidity by using RCs.. it's more of a "wait.. wha.. oh, I'm dreaming!"

Even if you don't use them, you should still perform them just because keeping lucid dreaming in mind all the time helps gain lucidity more often I've found. They are also helpful to use in a dream after becoming lucid to make sure you really are dreaming

about 75% of my DILDs i simply realize i'm dreaming. the rest of the time i do RC.

however, almost every FA i only become lucid by doing a RC, no matter how bizarre the situation.

Same for me. I never do RCs - even though it probably wouldn't be a bad habit to get into, and I'd probably have more LDs. But right in the middle of a dream, I'll just stop and realize I'm dreaming.

The only time I can ever recall doing a RC was when i was dreaming about playing and running through the mud in my wedding dress. I suddenly realized I would never get my dress dirty like that so I simply have to be dreaming! But then I'll be riding on a motorcycle across the ocean with Vanilla Ice and won't realize I'm dreaming... go figure.

I rarely do RCs to gain my original lucidty, I only use them If I have been luciding and I wake up(to catch FAs)

I have gotten out of the habit of doing RCs in real life, need to do some more

The more I see other PPL's opinions, the more I realize I have been relying on cues more than RC's...

I have even gotten to the point that just seeing women in my dreams trigger an LD...and no, they're not always sexual. I have just become accustomed to it (although the sexual ones are quite invigorating!).

RC's might help the process, however, and I've seen many opinions devoted to new LD'ers mentioning that it's a good first step.

RC's are a great way to quickly gain lucidity. I find after I have gained lucidity its always good to perform a reality check while lucid to re affirm to yourself that you are infact dreaming. It sucks when you begin to forget you are dreaming and fall back out of lucidity.

RCs are very useful, the "I'm dreaming" feeling may not always be there and it is unlikely to hit you in the middle of some routine activity...

You speak my words exactly. I never do RC's as a habit. So far I always recognized some of my dreamsignes to become aware. Yes, the only check I do afterwards is staring at my hand and slowly become fully aware and sure.

But I will definetely start doing RC after waking up. I didn't catch up a FA this morning and had to come back to my grammar school

Doing RCs seems to be dealer’s choice; some do and some don’t. I don’t’ do RCs in waking life, and I’ve never done one in a dream to become lucid. It happens either spontaneously or thru dream signs.

Once lucid there are techniques to help maintain lucidity and these are variously called stabilizing techniques or Reality Checks; like looking at your hands or spinning. In an LD I know I’m dreaming so looking at my hands is a stabilizing technique; for others it is an RC.

So much of this stuff is personal.

      it just helps to...

the reality checks - in my opionion - is just one way of knowing the difference between when you are asleep and wake and having it 'play' into the other (the more lucid during the day, the more you become at night - if you become more lucid at night and it's an endless cycle that 'plays on itself' - like the opposite of insomnia.

other ways are just asking yourself/ telling yourself': i know i am awake now, but if i were dreaming what would i do?

There are many other ways to accomplish what RCs do
"What if I were to tell u that you can take control...of all of this? Look at all these people. Seems as though they're just all chatting away? Nothing to do with u. And yet., maybe they're only here because u wanted them to. U are their god. U can make them obey u or even destroy u."
