What happens when you do WILD without REM

If you try to WILD without being close to the REM state (like right when you go to bed at night) what happens? Do you go to the dream state, or do you OOBE? Or do you see complete darkness since you are far from starting a dream?

I am asking this because I almost WILDed the other night after sleeping for 1 and 1/2 hours. I saw nothing but darkness. So I pulled myself out. I thought that I might get stuck doing nothing, and seeing nothing.

I dunno, 2 of the 3 times I've WILD'ed I ended up in a "vortex", which was all black and a bit of cloudy stuff... Perhaps I percieved the theta dream state aware that way, because I felt like the vortex bit took a split seccond, but also took like, an hour or so.

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that you go through REM all night long. It's just more frequent after several hours of sleep.

Anyone else agrees with Tsen? I was afraid to go through with it, and that's why I stopped cold.

There's nothing dangerous with WILD right off when you go to bed. And Tsen I don't think you hit you're first REM period until 90 min into sleep.

you don't have to be in a REM state to hit a WILD. I can go from waking to WILD sometimes in a matter of seconds. It is more like an OBE though.

Let me explain what exactly happened. This way no one gets mad.

I slept at 12:30 in the morning, and woke up suddenly at 2:30. I was exhausted, and I needed to sleep. Especially since I had to wake up early the next morning.

I closed my eyes, and I felt that my mind was ready for a WILD. I felt it, but couldn't really understand why. So I decided that sleep is more important, and I should not focus on WILDing. Right after I closed my eyes my thoughts were swept extremely fast from my thoughts of trying to sleep to seeing right in front of my eyes. I could see darkness with clarity. Don't ask me how, but darkness was clear. Then I heard voices. They were so clear. I could not believe how clear they were.

Then I said to myself this is not the time, and pulled myself out of WILD. Then I closed my eyes again, and I drifted again, but this time I saw myself sleeping on top of my body (OOBE). It was really weird. I couldn't believe it. My body was lying down side ways, and myself on top of it. "What the H...?" Then I woke up with amazement.

Everytime I went to sleep I would go through some other experience. Then I decided to put an end to it. I needed to sleep! I got up from bed and went to the bathroom to break the cycle (sorry, but I had to).

That's what happened. The first time I didn't understand where I was going, because it was dark, and nothing was happening. I didn't know if I was going to the REM state and dream or just get stuck in darkness. The second time I didn't even realize I was OOBEing until I got up.

That's what made me ask the question before I go into another WILD.

Did I mention that I was begining to feel paralysis at one point also? OK... I did!

moe, that experience sounds really great actually. everything was right. here are some of my observations. First, since it was late at night and your body had some deep sleep, you body felt quite rested. having woke up your mind was still clear. this is the ideal "mind awake, body asleep" condition for oobe. in addition you gave up trying, so that insured your success. too often attempts at trying to project get stopped because of trying too hard.

the darkness you experienced in the oobe was totally related to the time of night. whenever I have an oobe and it is dark, first thing I experience is total darkness. So your experience is quite normal. You felt paralysis because most likely it is a new thing for you and perhaps not sure about how to move around while flying.

the seeing darkness thing is completely natural, i get it all the time. in fact the WILD hypnogogic imagery is quite rare with me, most of the time I get darkness. Then I just will to see my hands and will to move around. I keep moving and keep trying to see my hands until I hit a spot with some light. It can take a good 5-15 minutes before that happens, but when I get the light then I can change dreams or whatever.

to me sounds like a good beginning. i would just keep trying it, maybe when you are more rested, try to go into it without any fear and just have fun! you'll do fine in the future if you ever encounter that again chances are you will turn that into a regular lucid dream, happens to me that way...

REM sleep is more than rapid eye movement, it was just named that way for what happens, I guess. It's characterized otherwise by your brainwaves (alpha? I can't remember which), being that they are extremely similar to that of being awake. It's the last(fifth), deepest stage of sleep that's been catagorized as far as I know.

I just hate having loose ends in posts :]
