Thinking It Until You Can't Turn It Off

Hey, I just had an idea.

What if I kept very close to the forefront of my mind the thought 'I'm going to lucid dream', every hour, every minute, and every second of every day so that my sub-conscious eventually makes my reality into, 'I'm going to lucid dream'?

Would I lucid dream heaps once that thought takes a place in my mind, and I can't turn it off? (unless I really put effort into stopping it)

Hmmm, but maybe I should have a different thought in mind? Got any ideas?

      Hrm.

Well, in theory it would work. But constant repition of a single thought would drive the best of us insane.

I wouldn't change my thought patterns just for an LD, thats fringing on a disorder. And it kind of voids the purpose of LD'ing in the first place, to get into an alternate reality, not to let it overlap your waking life. And also, if this was a constant thought in your mind, you would eventually train yourself to disregard it, so the words become meaningless sounds without any effect on the dreaming world.

You could do it. But the reward wouldn't be worth it.
What I hold in my two hands is enough to set me free.

Sounds like pure torture to the brain to me. I have trouble repeating something more than 100-200 times. Impossible too. There is no way any of us could lead a life while constantly thinking of lucid dreaming. You can't concentrate on anything if you are constantly thinking of something, It's too distracting. also, I agree with WILD Vertigo in that it borders on insanity/mental disorder. While in theory it would work, it is impractical, and as Lucid Dreaming is meant to be a way to ADD hours to your life at night while you rest, so you can do stuff, and not just waste the night, without any major expence to your waking life. (So if you spend a bit of time every day on dreamviews, and DJing, that's okay, but if you spend ten hours on it, you are wasting away your time in reality.) If you succeeded, then in my opinion it would ruin your life, and drive you insane. Your whole reality would be destroyed for a fun, but fake good.

I did something like that, for my first ld. The first day I came here, I realized I that it would take awhile to figure out, and I probably wouldn't keep with it. So, I decided to do a reality check every 10 minutes. I did that for the last 5 hours I was awake. I had a ld that night.

Course, I woke up, because I was so excited. I haven't bothered, and the second time I had an ld I didn't have to do it.

I think I would go crazy thinking an affirmation for so long as well

Maybe if someone were super motivated they could just hold the concept in mind 'I'm going to LD' for 3 hours, and have periods where they really try to ramp up the feeling. I only suggested 3 hours because some Surat Shabd meditators meditate for a minimum of 3 hours, and they're into experiencing astral like occurrences.

I, for one, have many things which require my attention each day and could not possibly occupy my every waking moment thinking about LD's. I think if I did have that sort of time on my hands I would just sleep all the time. Good chance of having an LD without the whole "driving yourself insane" thing.

I don't see why it would be worth it. Letting your waking life suffer for a better chance at luciding.

Oh but it is...it is worth far more if it could be given...
The only problem is that it borders with the impossible. Have you ever attempted keeping a constant state of mind? Let me assure you, it is ridiculously difficult; encompasses everything from physical exhaustion to mental torture.

While submerged in one's everyday life one isn't likely to think of something else constantly simply due to different aspects of the surrounding environment interfering; the interference being both technical and mental (the latter meaning getting attached to one concept or the other having the urge for thinking about it rise more and more until the constant frame of mind set up before collapses).

However, it is possible just like anything. In order to attain such a frame of mind one must surely have the intent for the goal at hand (lucid dreaming) but behind any intent lies a reason. Thus, with a good enough reason one can throw away all other needless thoughts and concentrate at all times on one's goal. It may not be simple, it may not be swift but it is certainly worth striving for.
