I know this is hard advice to follow, but basically you can't really test sleep paralysis. When you think about your body being able to move you might unknowwingly tense or flex a muscle. Even if you don't raise your arm, just a little flex or twitch will let your brain know that you are still awake.
This breaks from the tutorial but it works for me: try listening to some light ambient music. This help to keeps your mind awake. Something light and tracy - like meditation music in combination with deep breaths really helps to relax your muscles. If this dosen't help you can go another step forward: everytime you breath out just tell yourself that the higher you count you will feel heavier and heavier (again the only muscles you will actually feel are from your chest moving up and down) When I do this I eventually get in an awkward phase where i feel a little stiff, soon followed by the floating feeling - it does take awhile for me to get to this.
Basically we are all a little different. All of the advanced dreamers here seem to have found their own way of getting lucid. If one method doesn't work for you don't get frustrated, just try to alter it slightly and try again, you WILL eventually find something that works well for you.
here is another thing that helps: everytime you try one of these methods, even if you don't induce lucidity, think of how far you got, did you start getting imagery, did you feel a deep sense of relaxation? ANYTHING you feel that you hadn't before is a good step forward. remind yourself afterward of what you DID accomplish, acknowlegde it. It isn't pass/fail, more like teaching your mind step by step.
