Yeah, a lot of people experience spontaneous recall at some point.
I think that we use the same memory for both dream and real life events. Pretty much there are two parts of the same life. But it is harder to recall dreams because there's no structure, no hierarchy, often no names for people, places or events. If for the real life you can pretty much trace your life back day by day and it will be very similar with some significant milestones, dreams are all random short sequences of events. Usually we dont notice any similarities or patterns.
But once a person becomes interested in dreaming and starts to get more experience with dreams he would notice the patterns, chains of events and cross references (Especially using the dream journal) . This causes a flood of recalls for some people (like me and a bunch of other people, it sounds as if you are experiencing the same thing).
I think there are a lot of dreams stored somewhere in the back of our minds, and it's possible to recall them if you try hard enough.
If you wish to recall more of your past dreams think about your memories. Notice events, people and places that do not make sense or exist. Also think about the themes you see in your dreams most often and you will recall similar dreams.
