I'm still relatively new to LDing, but for the few I've had I used the look-at-your-hand RC. Now, lately, it's been failing me miserably. In a dream last night, I must have studied my hand for five minutes before concluding it was really all there, detailed with the right amount of fingers and everything. Has anybody else experienced a consistently failing RC?

Should I give up on looking at my hand?

I reccomend plugging your nose and seeing if you can breathe through it. In the 2 LD's I've had, it's worked. It can be discreet, it's fast, and it's worked for me.

I'm an incredible mouth-breather, so I don't know how well testing if I can breath through my nose will carry over into my dreams (I usually can't breath through my nose without concentrating on it in RL, anyways). I'll try it though.

I've been thinking about switching to reading signs/numbers(worked once, so technically has never failed me yet), or trying to puncture tangible objects(never tried it).

It's probably best if you keep switching which RC you use, or your mind could become accustomed to particular tests.

Adopted Megabenman although he disappeared a while ago.

      Lol, this really concerns me
. What happened to the good "old school" RCs? Why do all new people talk about looking at their hands and pitching their nose? These RCs are absolutely unreliable.

The only RCs that work most of the time are:
Checking Digital clocks multiple times - works all the time
Reading words over - works very often.
Turning lights ON - works fairly well

The good thing about these tests is that your mind cant become accustomed to them. Even if it tries very hard it cannot produce coherent stable results. The digital clock display would behave wildly, changing number of digits, colors, shape, blacking out. But these tricks just make you more aware that you are dreaming. Words also change, but it takes more time to notice the change. Text may be seen as hyeroglyphics (in early LDs), but it becomes more normal as you progress. Text doesnt seem to change color for me. Light switches are unpredictable, but every time you visit bathroom at night and the lights dont turn on, do another RC.

Looking at your hands, breathing through your nose, pushing fingers through the palm of you hand are entirely situational - one time they work other time they dont.
