      Sleep Interruption

Being new this forum, I am not sure if this has been discussed before. I have had the occasional lucid dream over the past few years (unintentionally). I have been able to achieve lucidity recently quite regularly through sleep interruption but how it happens is kind of strange. Let me explain.

This only happens when I have slept for a while and have reawakened completely (for at least half an hour). When I go back to sleep (after some tossing and turning) I go through this strange experience. As I am drifting off there is a loud rushing sound in my ears and it feels like blood is rushing to my head. I often feel like I am falling but I can't move. I am consciously aware the whole time. The first few times this happened, I was quite scared and fought to wake up. I thought I was having some sort of epileptic attack. After a few times of this happening I kind of figured out that the feeling must be some sort of transition into sleep/dream state. When it happens, I can now go into a dream directly with full lucidity and often with control over the action. I have also had lucid dreams where I realize I am dreaming and become aware but they are much more rare. Have others experienced this and have others become lucid this way?

I don't think there's anything to be afraid of.
To me, it sounds like a prototypical WILD (wake initiated lucid dream) where you fall asleep consciously. I do envy you, because so far I don't make any progress in achieving WILDs.

      Sleep well and prosper.

Everything you just explained was pretty much exactly what I felt when I had my first lucid dream! two days ago! It was a wild. I woke up at night, then when I went back to lay down I felt that rush in my head as you were talking about, followed by hypnogogic images and all that good stuff, then my first lucid dream, finally. However, I was not scared, only excited.

Yep, I've experienced that before. I don't know how to readily induce it, nor would I really want to. It creeps me out too much. The paralyzed feeling is very eerie, along with the rushing sound. I also see bizarre flashes of light when it happens. It happens to me very rarely. I fight it by shaking my body as violently as I can, and eventually I seem to break through the paralysis and fully wake up.

wow, you had an unintentional WILD. i am sincerely jealous...

and by the way, DILD is already a term, and it IS dream induced lucid dream. there are a lot more ILDs than most probably know about. i once read a whole list of them: WILD, MILD, DILD, RILD, UILD, TILD, the list goes on.
