Can you hear noises from the real world in your dreams? I had an idea for a lucid dreaming technique but it dont know whether it would work.

The idea is that you make an audio file that bleeps every ten minutes or so, with silence in between. You then wake up during an REM period, then go back to sleep, listening to this audio file through an mp3 player or ipod. The basic idea is that you hear the bleep in your dream and realise you're dreaming.

Would you hear the bleep? Would it wake you up? I'm interested to know what people think before trying it.

Yeah, I used to have the radio on when I was younger and I would hear songs in my dreams to wake up and find that they were playing on the radio. I don't know if it would work or not, you would need to learn the beep as a dream symbol otherwise you will impliment it as something in the dream.

Yes, I remember one dream where I actually became lucid because of hearing something in a dream. I was dreaming I was wacthing a movie and then left and I heard my mom coming up the stairs and right away I thought I hope she's not coming to wake me up I want to see how this dream turns out. Sicne then I have tried finding the perfect picth and loudness that I can hear in a dream without waking up. It didn't go very well, I used a wacth alarm. If you want to try this you should try something besides just beeps, Danny talked about hearing music in a dream and I think that would work much better than a beep. I tried putting my wacth under my pillow and I heard it too much I woke up I tried putting it on the ground and I didn't hear it, I tried putting it on my desk and I didn't hear it, I tried putting it on the other side of my bed and that didn't work (I think for this one it work me up I forgot) but the picth and the loudness of whatever your going to play is probaly differnt for every person and maybe even for every night.

Yeah, but chances are you'll need to leave the MP3 playing nearly all day, and every time it beeps do a reality check. Or just think about whether or not you're dreaming. This works kind of like a light-mask thing I heard of, the light blinks every time your in REM sleep and lets you know that your dreaming (except that one costs money)

I'm going to try this if I go to my dad's house tonight.

Here is a nice flash i've been using.
You can save your own rem cycle and beep whenever you want.
      Here is what i did.
I had this timer on whenever i was on my pc . I had it beep every 10-15 minutes and every time i was hearing it i was doing an RC.
When i wanted to sleep i had it beep with my REM cycle( after two hours of deep good sleep).
If you get used to it and mechanically make an RC when it beeps then it is only a matter Synchronization with your REM and of course Volume to achieve an LD.
You can combine it with some Brainwave program to synchronize your REM with the timer's cycle.
It could become a pretty nice Dream Sign at the end.

For Brainwave programs check the Tutorials.

Thanks for reminding me i forgot i had this one
      I'll try it again tonight^_^

Perhaps if i used a sound that faded itself in instead of just a harsh beeping that is likely to wake me up. If i listened to this sound during the day and kept on telling myself that whenever I hear it, I will be dreaming and will realise i am dreaming, do you think that would be enough?

I have heard myself breathing while in a LD.
I knew that it was me in the 'awake world' not from just the sound but the sensations i could feel in my chest. It was as though i was conscious (of myself sleeping) in teh awake world and at the same time extremly in control of my lucid state.
It was interesting thats for sure

I seem to remember a machine on the market that was supposed to induce LDs by flashing lights... some sort of glasses that you were supposed to wear when asleep.
