No matter how bad I want to have a lucid dream. There's no way in hell I'm leaving my bed after only 4-5 hours of sleep. But like lucid seeker said, it's good to put your alarm clock in a place where you have to get out of bed to turn it off. And turn the volume up full blast, that way you'll jet out of bed to kill the noise. And since you're already up, you might as well get a glass of water and take a piss. Maybe check your e-mail, or go for a little walk--just keep yourself awake for about 20 mins (It's a lot easier said than done).
When you go back to bed, let your body fall asleep, but keep your mind awake as for long as possible. You'll start feeling vibrations, seeing flashing lights in your eyelids, and you might hear noises (the vibrations and noises kind of freak me out sometimes). The transition is a fun part, you almost feel like you're being transported somewhere else, aka your dream.

The light patterns, are usually just flashing lights (red/yellow/orangeish colors). But sometimes I'll see pictures; usually of things I've never seen before.

Yea, it's pretty weird. I experienced the SP and lights/sounds and stuff a few times before I knew what they were. As far as the lights go, I don't remember being able to focus on them much. But the sounds scared me. I guess I was pretty close to becoming lucid, because I thought I was having some trippy dream, and I thought that I was dreaming about a whole bunch of people yelling at once, but then it got louder and it was really scary and I managed to wake up.

I'd say it's something you have to have experienced though
