Cheese and dreaming.

Ever heard that old saying that eating cheese before going to sleep can give you nightmares. Well I decided to put this to the test (not really, I had no money for food so I had to live off microwaveable pizzas and burgers for 2 days straight). Anyway, the first night I hadn't eaten too much, I tried to sleep and couldn't, so a friend lent me a temazepam to help me sleep, anyway, feel asleep, woke up and got on with my day, and ate, alot.

At about 1:30am I went to bed, was lying listening to music and just feel asleep, and when I woke up I could remember not 1, not 2 but 3 dreams....my memory is pretty frayed now seeing as I didn't write them down but life's a bitch.

Anyway, first dream I can remember very little of, all I can remember is a friend getting very upset (not a real life friend, like someone I knew in the dream, but who I know nothing of in real life).

The second dreaam, I'm not even sure if it WAS the second one, I just get a feeling as if it was. I was sitting in my friends grand there's car, and his granda lights up a ciggarette even though he no long smokes.

The third dream. This was more of a continuation of the first, I was recieving text messages from my friend to go and meet her somewhere.

Does anyone notice a different in their dream patterns after they eat alot of cheese?

If you kill 6 people in Unreal Tournament it is a Monsterkill, in Quake 3 it is Excellent and in Counter Strike it is "Kicked By Console".

no. My guess is placebo, self fufilling profecy. But whatever works...stick with it. Blind faith is, while stupid in one sense, a very powerfull tool.

Or maybe theres more to this cheese thing. I eat lots of cheese, and I guess I rememeber dreamse every day, but I dont think its the cheese.

hmm I've heard that a few times too, I'm gunna try it with an afternoon nap soon, but I don't know if the cheese will hve enough time to digest.

We'll see.

I was talking to my mother about this yesterday. She said it can affect your dreaming because your stomach has to work to digest it, so if you eat a lot before sleeping your body isn't quite as asleep as normal because your stomach is still active.

I don't know whether that's right though.

Apparently pickled onions can also affect your dreaming.

I've never noticed cheese or onions have an effect on me personally.

Cheese

I've heard of this before, my friend swears that a lump of chedder before bedtime gives him crazy dreams. The British Cheese Board has done a study on it - seems far fecthed to me but take a look:

Yep, there is also the Irish Cheese Board and the American Cheese Society !

Im kinda hoping its all meant to be a bit tongue in cheek. I'm wondering whether we are meant to take their dream research seriously? - its kind of hard

I'm prepared to believe it. You never know what will help, even if it is just a placebo effect. In any case, it's a good excuse to eat lots of cheese.

I like cheese.

hahaha, I love cheese too! Maybe that's why I remember my dreams pretty well!

I'll have to try it out tonight. I'll have a good hunk of cheddar and see what happens.

<3 Cheese.
The cheese board study seems a bit silly, but all the same, marvellous. Yay cheese!

My mom said it's because it's a dairy product and, esspecially for kids, if you eat it RIGHT before bed the cheese isn't digested properly due to sleep slowing down the process, and by early morning(when you have the most dreams) it's still there and turning icky in your stomach.

I bought some cheese today.

We shall have to see what happens....

Although, I have an essay due in on wednesday so this is probably not the best time. I am due a stress dream tonight, and I'd better not waste cheese on it.

lolol. That's sounds funny

But stress does kill DR, so indeed it's smart to wait.

Heh heh, yeh XD

Well, I ate pizza last night (which includes cheese) and I didn't have that stress dream I was due.

I had a dream involving a creepy man and making out with one of my classmates.

It'd be interesting to see if people actually notice a difference in dreaming due to cheese.

Thanks to all participants!

Woah, it was a big success for me yesterday ! No LD but 3 vivid dreams, in a period which was until now pretty poor in dream recall. I'll definitely take part in that survey.

Well, since I have no full cheese or anything, I put some grated cheese in a glass and I'm gonna pretend it's a drink or somethng
EDIT: Nah, picking the bits out is less messy

Indeed! Zombie dreams. Strangely enough I haven't gotten around to having one since I became a fan of zombie movies. A small mercy really, I wonder what Zombi 2, Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead, Land Of The Dead, The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue, Undead, Zombi 3, The Beyond and the game Dead rising will do to my dreams? My dreams will be gorier that's for sure.

In fact, tonight I'm gonna eat a big chunk of cheese before bed and go where my mind wants. At least the dreams are usually cool and vivid.

OMG. Okay this stuff works. I ate 4 peices of chees before i went to bed. I woke up and had 3 vivid dreams. Which is ALOT for me. I can remember faces/words/and actions. I even can recall how things felt. I usually recall 1 blurry dream but cheese = savior for recall. Oh and somebody said cheese makes the SC horny- IT does. My first dream was a sex one i woke up before i well, exploded . Try this cheese stuff guys.

Ummm I'm thinking it's a placebo... kind of.

Partly it's placebo, but also...

Cheese, like all dairy products, contains the sugar molecule lactose. Your stomach has to work harder to produce lactase (a protein) in order to break down the lactose.

(People who are lactose intolerant can't produce lactase very well.)

Your body is going to be more restless after eating a dairy product.

It's science.
