Hehe, just more proof that many people fail WILD because they're too nervous or expectant of what's to come. Your case is a perfect example. You weren't expecting it, so it happened. You were relaxed completely, which allowed it to come with ease.
      Stay lucid, stay WILD!

I'm very jealous. I can only Lucid through Reality Checks when things seem bizzare (I only RC when reminded of dreaming).

That exact same thing happened to me!! I had never heard of WILD, or lucid dreams when I had my first WILD either!

Hey, welcome. I actually had a similar experience a good year before I'd ever heard of lucid dreaming. I just thought up the idea of relaxing myself very deeply. After awhile, I had hypnagogic audio hallucinations. That lasted only a few seconds maybe and led into the sensation of flying. Finally, visuals kicked in. I was flying over a heavily wooded area. The whole thing ended within a minute, probably.

I've never considered what I'd stumbled onto that night a lucid dream but I know it's in the same family, only occurring during the hypnagogic state as opposed to REM sleep. Your case may have been different, however.

Like you, I've never been able to repeat that intensity again directly from the waking state, when first going to sleep. But I've done it plenty of times after waking from sleep. Wait, is that what you're talking about? I bet it is...

Oneironaught, I'm the same way as you. Can't every get HI or audio hallucinations whilst going from awake to sleep, but if I wake up late in the morning after a lot of dreaming I can.

For me personally, I get further with WILD's the more tired I am.

Yeah, in fact, I've only really gotten good, vivid audio that way a small handful of times. My latest was a earlier this month. What I heard was the following; I have no idea what it means but it was so vivid and crazy that I had to write it down:

Other than those two, it's only happened once or twice (if at all). But I've never had the visuals quite so vivid or stable since that very first time and, believe me, I've tried many times.

P.S. When I spell-checked this post, I had "hypnagogic" spelled like: "hyponagogic". Google toolbar spell-checker had only one suggestion: "spongecake". What the hell?
