Hi, this is a sort of a DEILD/WBTB thing. Remember that there aren't really any rules, lucid dreaming is a new field, and we are still exploring the possibilities and experimenting with different methods. Feel free when you try a method to change it, and try to find what works for you best. It sounds like when he turned off the alarm, he was still very sleepy, and so when he fell back asleep he managed to get back into the dream.
This is a techniques that I heard mentioned a few times, it's like a WBTB with minimal time of staying awake, and attempting to go back into the dream you just left.
