Yes you can.
But its a lot harder to do
My biggest problem with WILD is that I go from waking to sleeping and sleeping to waking far too easily, so consequently I always fall asleep and lose consciousness whenver I try to WILD during the night. The few WILDS I've had (2 or 3, that's about it), where all upon going to sleep.
Many people believe that we dream only during REM sleep, based on an old scientific model from several decades ago. These days neuropsychology and neurobiology has come to the conclusion that REM and dreaming are actually not directly related. We dream from the moment we sleep to the moment we wake. So yes, it is possible to WILD right at the moment of going to sleep.
If I remember correctly, Tibetan Dream Yoga bases itself on the premise that you never even lose consciousness. These guys basically go to sleep, WILD, and remain lucid all night long.
That said, it's a lot harder to try and WILD directly when going to sleep. So unless you have no choice or you're pretty much an expert, I would recommend you try the WBTB method that most people suggest.
