That's the real problem with teaching WILD to someone. It's hard to explain a mindset in words. It's like describing smells: you can use similarities and allusions, but you cannot describe the specific smell with conceptual words.
What I told myself was to stay aware, as if I was waiting for something to happen. As if it was 3:30 and I needed to do something important at 4:00; and I must not fall asleep unconsciously during it, so that I don't miss my appointment. But then again, it worked for me, but being metaphorical, it could nto work for you
Also, not all techniques work for everyone. If you cannot watch HI without focusing on it, then try to counting or the focusing on your body techniques. WILD is about trial and error, to finally get what works for you. It is just like learning to play the piano: you must get used to all the new processes and situations. While a begineer won't work out the difference between a DOH and a MI, a trained intrumentalist will recognise them by ear.
