i realized i was dreaming but could not attain lucidity, help?

so i had this dream the other week coincidentally the same day i found a site explaining lucid dreaming & techniques to control dreams (i had been told about lucid dreaming before but hadn't understood it till then.) the dream i don't remember much of at all, but the part that i realized i was dreaming i was walking through a house (not mine) where my mom was in one room and after talking to her i was about to leave through the front door, passing my father (i understood him as my father but for some reason he didn't look like him) watching tv on the way. this struck me as strange because my mom hates my dad (they're divorced) and i realized i was dreaming, after realizing i was dreaming i then attempted to fly but had no idea how to even start so i gave up & continued with the dream that i no longer remember. any explanations or similar occurences with anyone? btw, this is my first experience with any lucid dream

You were Lucid if you knew it was a dream. People often confuse control and lucidity. Lucidity is simply knowing you're dreaming. Here we strive to also help people gain control of their dreams, but in its entirety, Lucidity is simply knowing you're dreaming, which you achieved. Congrats!

Control will come with time and practice. The idea is to know its a dream and that you aren't bound by the laws in waking life anymore. Don't intend to fly, expect to fly.

Going lucid is when you realize that you're dreaming. You were lucid; you just didn't have the power to change the scene, that's all.

Once again, don't merely intend to do something. Expect to do it. You have to try to cast aside the physical laws you're bound to in waking life. I like to think of it like The Matrix. (If you haven't seen it, get out from under your rock and go watch it )

You need to free your mind. Don't think you can do something, know you can do something. Realize that this is a world in your head, and thus your world. You make the rules. If you can grasp this concept, the possibilities in your dreams are endless.

Keeping that mindset will allow you control of your dream. Sometimes you won't be able to control it at all. It happens to the best sometimes. Just check out a lot of the Dream Journals or ask around, you'll see that even the most experienced lucid dreamers experience fallacies in control.
