Usually when what you described happens to me, I just keep relaxed (but alert) and all of a sudden I'll end up in a dream.
However, if you are seeing images, I would suggest trying to "reach for them" to get yourself in the dream faster. Once during SP, I was seeing a TV with random scenes and "stepped" into the dream that way.
Also, sometimes I'll just be seeing spots or something so I will imagine that the spot is where I want to go in the distance and imagine myself flying towards it. By the time I reach the spot I go into it and am into the dream.
