      The Hand Reality Check

Ok, everyone who does the hand RC (were you look at your hands and spot something strange), I want you to post here and say what exactly was wrong with your hand last time you did it. Or make a list if needed.

I did a reality check with my hand this morning. All the skin was crawling, like when you look at a spinning spiral for a while and look at your hand. The weird thing was, I was awake! Must've just been dizzy.

      Useless comment +1

Hmm... the dreams were hazy and dark over all, but I looked at my hands, and they were very fuzzy and blurry. It was dark, and they, along with almost everything else in the dream, were lit/colored an unsaturated dark blue... just realized that bit haha. I remember it sort of looked like water rippling across the surface, and after a few moments of looking they cleared and looked like normal (blue) hands. Everything was tinted blue, though.

In another lucid I realized I was dreaming, but it started to fade. Everything was pristinely lit and a warm yellowish tint. I looked down at my hands to stay in the dream (fail!), and they looked just as normal as they do now. Maybe not identical, but nothing was strange or out of place. I remember my pinky nail especially on the left hand drew my focus, and the nail was rather squarish (I bite my nails so they tend to be roundish ). But even my nails looked like I had bitten them!

Interesting stuff. It's just occured to me that I often use particularly weird features of my hands a reality checks. I have a burn mark on my right hand index finger, and my left hand ring finger is disfigured from having broken it. These things aren't usually there in dreams.

P.S. Good choice of avatar, Shift. I love the Sandman Series.

Yeah, I have a scar on my left hand from... stupidly using an xacto knife and cutting myself down to the fat. Yikes. It only happened about a year ago now, and so I never think of it while dreaming or awake. I keep telling myself that I will use its absence as a dream sign, but I never question my state in dreams. I always just KNOW that it is a lucid, or go on believing that people fly, there are groups of angry people after me, that I live in lighthouses, and that it is common for apocalypses to happen... *sigh*

Gaiman is god I see you're from Australia? I'm also a huge fan of the Tomorrow Series by John Marsden. Unfortunately no one in the US has ever heard of it Trying to talk to friends about that is like trying to talk to people who never dream about LDs

As far as I can remember, this RC has been pretty much foolproof for me. Usually, my pinky and ring finger stretch out to the side, as if being pulled by a magnetic force. Also, I usually have either too little or too many fingers. I had seven once, four another time, and six on another occasion.

Did you read Gaiman's story about the man who tested whether death was simply caused by belief in death? I thought that one was brilliant. He lived for centuries purely because he believed that he wouldn't die. It's an interesting thought. Perhaps if you completely believed that you would live forever, then you might. Unfortunately, there will always be a part of us that doubts it. Stupid humanity. I think it was volume two... Not sure though.

Anyway, I digress. I've never heard of the Tomorrow series, but I have heard of John Marsden. It's pretty hard to live in Australia and not hear about him. Maybe I'll give the series a look.

I love Sandman too especially Death and Delirium. Lucifer's portrayal in them is fantastic too.

I would like to read more stories about the rest of the Endless family.
Sometimes a good exit is all you can ask for.

I recommend the one about Death, also by Gaiman. A fantastic read, it gives an interesting perspective on death and people's reactions to it. I liked Desire.

That was an awesome story, especially how Death goes to him and sees he has no desire to die I loved the evolution of his character over the centuries, so interesting!
I thought it was a fun series! I think his other books are crap though! After all that effort I went to to special order them! haha
I had a dream in which I met Dream... that was one of the coolest dreams I've ever had. More than any other dream, I felt that it was real...

Anyway I think we've all digressed Come on, people. What about your hands? I'm curious now, too!

The first time i remembered to look at my hands, i didnt have any xD

Another time, i had massive indents in them. Probably because i was playing guitar the day before, but these indents were not natural, they were crazy D:

The last time i looked at my hands they were see through.

Once I had seven fingers. It scared me for some reason.

The only things I've read by Gaiman were Coraline and Neverwhere. I loved Coraline. It was the creepiest book I've ever read. I even have the audiobook, read word for word by the author. Neverwhere was fair, but not one of my favorites.

I'm not really into manga, so I probably won't be reading Sandman.

I like Garth Nix too. He's Australian, isn't he? The Abhorsen trilogy was really cool.

In dreams of unspeakable joy—of restored friendships; of revived embraces; of love which said it had never died; of faces that had vanished long ago, yet said with smiling lips that they knew nothing of the grave; of pardons implored, and granted with such bursting floods of love, that I was almost glad I had sinned—thus I passed through this wondrous twilight. —George MacDonald

I can imagine you'd be quite surprised to find you had seven fingers! Whenever something like that happens in my dreams I come up with the craziest justifications for it... "Guess I drank some radioactive fluids..." wtf.

I've read American Gods, which is pretty good. You have to know a lot of mythology, I think, to fully appreciate the story. But even to someone completely ignorant (read "me") it was a fun book.

I never read comics, but that is the beauty of Sandman. You don't even feel like you're reading a comic book! The stories are too beautiful and awesome for that. Not to mention, the entire series is about dreaming I'd recommend at least looking over it the next time you are in a bookstore.

I've never heard of Garth Nix, I'll have to look him up

The last time I did the Hand RC in a dream I counted the fingers on my right hand by touching each finger with my left hand( one at a time ) and counting out loud. I ended up with 8 fingers. At this point I knew I was dreaming.
