This is actually not uncommon.  I think the precise timing has to do with our biological clock. I had a period during high school where I would wake up at 3:14AM every night. It's probably the stress that's affecting your sleep, as you mentioned.
I agree with this. Actually, I believe that it may be even more precise than many of us know. There are times when I will have a certain sleep pattern that I've gotten used to, and then something will come along to where I have to wake up much earlier than normal. I will set my alarm, and if it's something important, I will usually go to be stressing about "Man I really hope I don't over sleep!" And, even though it's completely anomalous to the amount of time I'd been sleeping for like weeks at a time, I will wake up about 5 minutes before my alarm goes off, as if I was so deeply anticipating what time I had to wake up, that my body kept track and even woke me up before my alarm had to.
