Is it just me or can a random thought cause sleep paralysis? can this help with WILD and DEILD techniques?

I really don't think it's thoughts alone that causes SP, but proper relaxation, both physical and mental. Having an irregular sleep pattern, and lying in an uncomfortable position might also cause SP. I'm speaking from some experience here, too.

When I do have sleep paralysis I usually feel very comfortable before it happens. Also, I must have been a little bit distracted when I started this thread; I meant to write "a random thought" not "random thought". An example of when I went into sleep paralysis is when I woke up at night and as I was laying there I just had the random thought " music popcorn" pop into my mind. After that I felt very dizzy and I couldn't move.

Random thoughts, I feel, are there to distract you from trying to become aware while you are asleep. Your mind is trying to make you focus on other things so it can run its boot-down sequence, if you stay aware while you are WILD'ing you are interrupting this sequence and your brain has to figure out another way to fall asleep.

If you let these thoughts get the best of you, odds are you will fail to WILD, which sometimes happens to me when I WBTB.

Just let the thoughts go by without focusing on them and just relax while you do focus on one thing, whether it be your breathing, lucid dreaming, or anything else that you feel helps you to accomplish a WILD.

What if I concentrate on a thought that pops up instead of letting my mind wander completely?

what you said might actually help, concentrating on a thought that pops into your head. it makes sense because if you're focusing on lucid dreaming or your breathing, you've got to to it lightly and almost let your mind wander some or else you will never fall asleep. it's not about how much you think about lucid dreaming, really, it's about when you think of it. letting your mind wander completely on it's own and occasionlly coming back to the idea of LDing very lightly might be your best bet. keep your mind subtely aware!!

If you have a wandering mind/thoughts you'd have better chance with DILD. If you use WILD you'll end up torturing/preventing yourself from having randome thoughts.... You'd have a better night's sleep not LDing in that way..
