There's plenty of different methods, though the most effective seems to be working at it after 5-6 hours of sleep. Don't know if you're doing this or not. If your problem is falling asleep there's techniques to help with that as well. Some people take some caffeine to help themselves out. Others wait a while and keep themselves busy until their minds are awake.
Basically, I find if the mind is exhausted it'll never happen. But if its just moderately tired there's ways to help. My preferred method is focusing on breath. Try to remain very aware and notice when your thoughts start to drift away. If you let them drift too far you'll drift right into sleep. Just bring your awareness back to the breathing when you notice it happening. If you're patient and work at this long enough, something will eventually happen.
