      Hypnogagic Imagery?

I do this from time to time, especially when I'm pretty tired.

I'd just rest my body, and wait for something to come, images, sound, etc. Though, I don't expect them to come to my actual eyes, but I sort of wait within the spaces of my imagination. I'd eventually come to see pictures, like me doing something. But, until I willfully woke myself up, I didn't realize that those images were passing by. Only after I woke up a few minutes later, did I recall it. To remember my state of mind during this imagery session, I was utterly clueless as to what was going on, and I understood just why it was hard for me to be conscious in a full fledged dream. Showed me how much I needed to work on! The dream world truly is a large abyss to the new explorer!

Yep, that is exactly what goes on with me as well. When you learn how to passively view these images while concious, you will be a long wasy down the road toward WILD.

      Keep practicing!

Hrm. When I go to bed after a while I can easily see the moving globs of colour... only after 5 mins they go away or something... that always confused me with what everyone else is saying about HI. Also my mind usually during that state is not sleepy at all, just normal. Staying concious during the time where you start to see real images and hearing sounds and stuff is really hard though because as soon as you notice you're too awake already heh.

Woew, that's great! I had no idea that you could approach lucidity from that direction. I have already had a bit of experience with this: at night in British Columbia, on a rounded cold stone beach, I sat after a long night trying to meditate with my eyes open. I recognized what I thought was the hypnagogic state and after 'bouncing back' a few times, was able to get them to persist for a fair degree of time...
which promptly lead to a nap on the beach ~:)
i will have to try this again, now that i know more clearly what it could be for.

my problems with this is that if i lie to long watching for HI and feel that i dont get anywhere i become to awake. Think its because its hard letting go and float passivly but consciouss into the imagery. I notice especially if something happen on "the screen" my eyes wakes up to see what it is. Got to work on that.

Wow... passively viewing HI. I thought I had learnt EVERYTHING about WILD ;D
I can't recall this skill being written in any of the tutorials I've read.
      Good topic.

Thats what I used to get. It's wicked good fun
Haven't got real good at LD yet, and been very lazy about trying it recently
But when I was taking time to record dreams and atempt LD I found a big increase in HI.
It would happen mostly in the morning, when I was just waking up.
You know when you kinda 50% wake up, can't be botherd getting out of bed, and 5 mins later your'e out to it for another 20 - 30 mins.
In that stage I could just let the images float around and happen. Gradually I would become more 'in' them rather than watching them. Had an accidental WILD like this once I think.
I have been noticing a little bit just before sleep. But it never lasts for long Just end up falling into deep sleep
I've been so lazy - someone kick me.

HI is both annoying and cool for me. 70% of the time its annoying and when i have a scene happen I jerk awake. Its the other 30% of the time it gets interesting... I still remember being paralysed and seeing all white and hearing voices.. man was that creepy, one of my first attempts at it. I wonder if someone had something similiar happen, its scary even being used to it.

Most of the time I find myself involved with random word assocation. Not just words but concepts which have no real meaning...rapid fire. Its just like one thiing leads to another. Kind of nonsensical. Makes me think of what a computer does, like one of those Gibsons that searches out physics answers, constantly working. Neurons or whatever just firing randomly.
Recently I woke from an HI when I was just drifitng into sleep. It was like I was on some kind of vehicle moving down a street, but it was just me moving, fast, and out ahead of me to the left and right, shot out what looked like flat rolls of ribbon, unrolling ahead of me faster than I was going. But somethig woke me and I remembered it.
If physicists say that matter is frozen light, and Stars symbolize both angels and people alike in the bible, then what does that make you?(angel)?

I always find listening to Psychedelic music on headphones helps! its like your in your own little world, the music is yours. the images are yours etc.

i like what the last poster said. very nicely written.

I think that when you ride the wave of consiousness, you start to realise that it has many layers, like an onion, you start to turn off and see images appear that you have no control over.

Yeah HI is awesome, It happens to me the same way, just feels like random thoughts merge with random images and it just keeps changing over and over, feels like your mind is just letting go or something. I wish I was able to remember better the thoughts and sounds that go thru my mind while watching HI because everything I think is so conceptless it surprises me when I realize what Im thinking.

The imagery you guys see, Is it realistic or more like shapes and colors ?? For me it always seems everything is monochromatic or just two or three solid colors but the images are shaped very realistically and detailed, kinda like a moving tie dye shirt or something.

The unofficial title for this activity is "image streaming" you can find lots of info on the net about it,
just type it into a search engine and it gives you lots of cool information on how to control it
      - just like Lucid Dreamin'

I usually get blob's of light that is like energy, but if i focus my mind and think about colours etc,
they appear, a good exercise is to think about something, like a tree and imagine it in your mind's eye,
then hopefully if will trigger off your third eye (i always repeat in my head,
let the left eye talk to the right eye and vice -versa)

David Lynch has a great tool, he closes his eyes and builds peoples faces he’s never seen before
and then he lets his mind break free of self control and then faces appear in his mind one after
another, they are somehow like building blocks, a universal language of the mind!!!

this site is excellent and simple to understand http://www.debateit.net/improvethought/ima...gestreaming.htm Its a cool way to record and remember what you see!

I used to do it every day at least once, and during the summer 2 or 3 times just lay down and wait for HI, or during class I would close my eyes and lay my head down if it was quiet and nothing was going on and I would get HI. I went to colorado since last friday, 9 days ago. The time I went before that 4 or 5 months ago I was in the car in the passanger seat and I just closed my eyes and waited, and for a while I was watching a big green field like scene from above, sort of like from an airplane, but it was more like I was under the airplane, I must have just sat there and let it go for 5 minutes or more, then I guess I fell asleep, it was great made the 12 hour drive almost fun

I'm in a roughly 20 day dry spell and those of you who have had the same thing happen will know how disappointing it is. I'm not worried but LD'ing is so incredible, I want to have one every night. I have been using WBTB and MILD and was averaging 2-3 LD's per month. I had two in one week and then the dry spell struck.

Question: Hypnagogic imagery begins for me right on schedule shortly after I close my eyes. It's usually colors at first and then it changes into detailed scenes within a few minutes, some short and some long. Some even have lengthy conversation in them and are very dream-like. My problem is that more often that not, I don't progress past this point and as someone else has said, I'm "too awake" at this point to do anything. I'm lying there awake with my eyes closed, very aware of sounds and my environment, viewing these intricate scenes.

Anyone know if I can use this to my advantage?

I think most of my "speed bumps" are related to my difficulty of falling back asleep after having been awake even for a few minutes. Any tips on this would be welcome.

Anyway, it's a dark, cool, rainy day here....I think I'll try a nap!

If I just look into the darkness of my mind for 30 minutes to an hour, they will apear. The first time I was in a car, meditating (I also had a headache and I was tired), they appeared. It might have been a oobe because what I saw was really in frount of me in real life. My friend woke me up right when I was about to try WILD. Grrrr...

Mine are usually very dream-like. I rarely get flashes and colors, but rather scenes that form a few minutes after I lie down and close my eyes. Sometimes as I'm about to lose consciousness, something will happen in the HI, I'll feel it like it was happening to my physical body, and will jerk awake.

Sorry to quote such an old post but I heard those 'globs of colour' were also known as 'disetennuated images'. Well, that's what I've found out.

I don't think you can use going to sleep and use the HI you get to your advantage, or it is very hard. I can't get past the trippy scenes, sometimes I just use it as a form of crazy television! For me I only ld after I wake up, if I don't have to get up for school and I wake up and am in a very calm tired droopy eyed state but conscious enough to try to WILD I just close my eyes, and the barely visible shadows from my fan turn complicated and more realistic and I am in my room with sp almost immedietely, then I might have to wait a few seconds or just stand up right away, I just stand up and I am in.
