      My dream awareness sucks!!

Alright almost all the dreams i remember, usually one a night has something weird in it that should tell me I'm dreaming. Like today I had a dream where I was skateboarding with some people and then this raccoon comes out of this forest near the area we're at. It comes towards us and one of the guys I'm with picks it up and then throws it. Eventually it comes towards me and this is where it gets weird. I have my skateboard tail end pointing towards me and when the raccoon runs to me it jumps on my board and I thrust the board into the air and the raccoon goes flying. I do this like four times. Then the raccoon runs at me again but this time it grabs my board and won't let go. So I'm playing tug of war this thing and when i get my board back I just smack the damn thing with it and it dies. Then all of its friends come.

So, is there any way to get your awareness better in dreams, because lots of the dreams I have have weird moments like this. Thanks.

To rise the possibility of getting lucid apart from dream signs / reality checks try to WILD. I have the same problem and found WILD much more reliable for me.

You think you've got it bad? I constantly have dreams about lucid dreaming, and don't become lucid! The other night my dream mask went off, I knew what it was, and still didn't become lucid! From that point on, I was wearing it in the dream, then I had a conversation with my brother about it and LDing, but still the penny didn't drop.

The only advice I can give is to do WBTB every night. Every time I've done that, the thought of dreaming seems to lodge itself in my mind so much more easily. Most if not all of my LDs and close calls have come after doing WBTB.

That's the funniest thing I've ever read on here frustrating as it is! Recently I had a dream in which I was complaining to someone about not getting lucid the previous night and the penny didn't drop for me either. Luckily the DC told me to do a RC and I realised I was dreaming!

WILD is easier but takes a lot out of your sleeping schedule, unless you got nothing to do in the morning

The other night I had a dream where a giant crab was terrorizing a football stadium. It then turned into a giant cabbage, and ghostbusters came down from the sky. I was shooting at the giant cabbage with an automatic weapon, hoping to God that none of the stadium staff would be hurt by the giant cabbage.

I cannot even conceive of being lucid during a dream. The idea of knowing you are dreaming sounds so bizarre. Every dream I've ever had, I was 100% convinced that it was actually happening. What's more is that I'm usually extremely involved and I care deeply about the stupid stuff happening, and believe me when I say I've had weirder dreams than the cabbage one.

Here's to trying to staying positive about learning to lucid dream.

I can't really say anything to help you guys, but if it makes you feel any better I know what you mean about having crap dream awareness. I'm usually totally zonked out in my dreams and couldn't imagine ever becoming aware in that state until it actually happened. I also have no self-belief, no willpower and no real power of control over my own life, so I wasn't very positive about ever being able to LD, and yet I did! If I can do it, anyone can, whether they believe they can or not. All you have to do is persist and try new techinques.

Oh, you think that's bad?!? Once I had a dream where I demonstrated the nose reality check to my friend. I showed him how I could breath, which meant I was dreaming. Oh, then I noticed I was wearing my pajamas and preceded to do a thirty foot standing long jump. Guess who never became lucid?

I also hate when you have a discussion about lucid dreaming in a dream, and don't become lucid. Makes you feel stupid. As for Kiloisalb, that's a really funny dream. Trust me though, I've had much worse (though this year my dreams have been normal and boring so far). The best way to get better at knowing whether or not you are dreaming is just reality checking in real life when you see something weird, or suspect that you may be in a dream. Obviously, that doesn't always work (check above paragraph!), but it helps greatly. The real thing that will get you lucid is usually not the actual reality check, but the simple thought: "Am I dreaming?" A discussion about dreaming does not mean you are asking that question, which is why that discussion didn't turn you lucid. In my dream reality check, though I said that it meant I was dreaming, I didn't actually put any thought into it, and didn't become lucid. I find these are some good times to reality check:

~Something you just suddenly expect to happen, happens (ex. you for some reason expect a white car to come around a curve with not evidence to support that beyond a feeling, and a couple seconds later it happens).
~ Coincidences that are almost too unlikely to be true.
~ You just "feel" like something in the world is a little off (feeling light, colors seem off, and so on).
~ "You won the Spanish lottery!" (Check both if you are dreaming, and if your spam filter is installed).

My favorite reality check is the nose reality check; simply pinch your nose and try to breath. Obviously, awake, you can't. In a dream though, I've had a 99% success rate with this one. Don't rely on reality checks that depend on reading or time telling; in my experience neither brings up an enormous amount of trouble.

Here's some reality checks, try poking yourself while dreaming, your flesh might be more elastic than in real life. Bite your arm, you shouldn't be able to feel your bite.

thanks for all the replies guys. I have been doing some reality checks but not really to the extent where I think "Am I dreaming". So far, I've had like 3 LDs, but they didn't last to long and I was semi-lucid in all of them. I'll keep practicing though.
