      Attaining Lucidity: What worked best for you?

      Hey all.
      I'm new here and desperate to start lucid dreaming. I've LD'd before, at the age of around 11 to overcome nightmares. For the period of a few months I could control my dreams, although since then nothing much.

      The Lucid Dream Induction Techniques Page is a little overwhelming, with quite a few induction techniques to choose from. It'd be great if you could tell me what worked best when you were starting out. Which induction technique is best for beginners?

      For beginners, probably DILDs, since they require a daytime commitment.

      RCs throughout the day, and a mind constantly thinking about LDs is the best experience a beginner can get.

      DILD. A few reality checks throughout the day. Easy, fun, creative, and integrates well with keeping a dream journal and identifying dream signs. A big bundle of getting on your way to lucid dreaming, and when you have 20 fingers or your finger goes through your palm, it's a ridiculously fun and memorable experience that will stay with you.

      MILD requires that you work on your prospective memory before it can work. WILD requires learning that balance of mind-awake body-asleep that so many find difficult. WBTB requires waking up, but it's not... really a technique in and of itself. It's just waking up. CAT is hard because you have to revamp your entire sleep schedule, plus it apparently takes a while to kick in, which is a drawback. DEILD is the easiest, except personally I find it only works if I've already been lucid and then woken up, I have a much harder time from regular dreams. In terms of newbies learning to WILD, I think they should focus on DEILD.

      SO, in short, DILD for newbies.

      Ive never got anything other than DILDs to work. What worked best for me is doing a WBTB after about 6 hours sleep. I think all of my LD's have been in that "back to bed" period.

      DILD for beginners definetally, when you first find out about lucid dreaming, you become so enthusiastic and desperate that you do everything you need to prepare for a DILD. but after that it changes (well it did for me) and you wnt to change to something which is more reliable. e.g. DEILD, WILD etc.

      VILD. did for me but because a VILD is basically the same thing as a WILD, I voted for WILD.

      From my own experience I would say
      1). Belief that it's really possible. If John or Jane Doe can do it so can u. All humans have the capability. It's a developed skill like walking. You didn't pop out of mom and start walking. We all began by crawling. Then one day we stood up, then fell down. Then we got up again walked a short distance then fell down again..
      2). Motivation / Desire - Eventually our desire to be like those around us (big people) parents, brother/sister, etc we eventually achieved the ability to balance ourselves and walk... After awhile we even learned to run.
      3). Determination / Practice-Notice we didn't suddenly get up and walk. We went from crawling to walking to crawling to walking. Each time as babies we got up and tried again we walked further and further. Yeah we fell down once in awhile who didn't. Same of LDing. Eventually we on our feet through practice (ie repetition) till brain and muscles were trained.
      4). Patience-Many people give up to easily when they can't master something in a day, week, or even a month. It took me nearly 6 months to have LDs at will and really get "in control". For some people it might take a month but i'm willing to bet that's rare and they're probably monks in training..lol What i did was pick 2 techniques from Stephen Laberges "lucid dreaming" book in the mid 80's and implemented those two techniques night after night after night. I also read alot on the subject and really wanted to LD. I didn't start just suddenly LDing. I'd have LD then wakeup midway or not even remember dreaming some days but there's one thing I've learned is...
      5) Give Yourself a Break. Ld is a moderately difficult skill to learn. But remember it's not impossible. The more you practice and really want to LD the more often you will. If you've been practicing for a month and still haven't got it hang in there but NEVER EVER beat yourself up over it.. We all have our off days then a succession of LD's then nothing. We may think we're doing something wrong.. When in fact what i found is that I quite having alot of dream if i'm not learnig from them.
      6) Motivation / Reason for LDing. Mine is to learn. I have more dreams when I learn something from them that can be applied to my waking life. If i don't get anything out of them i suddenly find the tap goes dry or i start catching reoccuring themes. Having fun in dreams is okay 2 and I occasionally I LD as a mental vacation. Thing is I see about dream world is it's a state where alot of knowledge can be gained about self, the waking world & ones place in it.
      Dreams reveal who we are. For example if 1 dreams of fighting all the time think about it. Do you behave that way in waking reality? Maybe you need to learn ways of acting to get what u want. Maybe you never talk to people in dreams that could help u. Do you not ask for help in waking life? Maybe you need to begin learnig how. Your dreams are there to help you.
      6). Keep a dream Journal and write EVERY day.. even if you don't remember any images.. When i first started if i couldn't remember anything i'd just write how i felt or impressions. journal might have "felt distressed.. sensed something green" and that's all it might have that entry. but i had to get that dream recall skill down. It's kinda funny once your dreaming brain realizes your serious about remembering and becoming Lucid it'll eventually kick in and you might start getting more visions than u can handle. After several months i got to where i had to limit my request to dream much less become lucid . work and life didn't allow me to record 3 seperate 15 page dreams of detail every night. lol..
      all i got 4 now.. it turned into a dissertation huh...rofl.. Sharing your dreams helps... See Link 4. just make sure you find someone you trust to tell em to but make sure you tell Someone...... By way see my 1st link it is very relevant to dreaming in that all transfomative exeriences have 3 important phases: preparation, the experience and finally processing of experience or learning from it. I know quite a few people who can Ld at will and have for years but they've never learned what that world was really trying to teach them. My dreams have taught me more about myself (good/bad) and my world than any book, tv show or university..

      I said DILD. It's the first step a lot of members need. DEILD is a close second to me; a little bit of effort, but a lot of results in the long run. WILD just discourages the majority of newbies in a heartbeat. I only recommend it to noobs who seem like they can do it, so it's rare day when I do.

      Its not there but i would say a CILD which is a Chocolate_induced Lucid Dream.
      Thats how i obtained my first LD
