Proof that reality checks often don't work

I had three dreams last night. The first one was some weird ass dream relating to what I do for a living.

I usually wake up after my dreams, so after the first one I was lying in bed, and trying to get to do a WILD so I didn't bother to record it in my journal. I said to myself... remember these words... and remembered a sequence of 8 words to help me remember my dream from just now, so when I woke up I could backtrack from the end.

Well, I found myself in a second dream repeating those words to people whom I work with. The funny thing was, I told them "Yes, and to remember my dream I am repeating these words. I'm also trying to go lucid."

so I told other people in my dream I was trying to become lucid, as well as talking about a dream I just had, and it didn't occur to me at all that I was dreaming.

there's got to be a better way, because reality checks don't work for me at all, as I'm totally oblivious to what's going on around me.

You could try inducing SP using the WILD technique.
Then jump into a dream when it begins to occur?

And how long have you been doing these reality checks? They don't work overnight (pun not intended). You need to keep at it until it becomes second nature to question reality, which can take quite a while.

Also, to add to what Mercen said, what you are describing I wouldn't really call a reality check. It seems more like a MILD attempt.
I'd read through this if you haven't:

agreed although most of my lucid dreams, reality checks were unneccesary. i think it just depends on the dreamer. like how serious are you when you question reality during the day.

dreams are a reflection of the way we are. if we question reality during the day but without effort of being serious, it will be the same while dreaming. seeing something out of the ordinary during the day, you are sure it's all reality because you're there in person so 'how could it not be real', but most people wouldn't ask if it was real and thats why most people out there never become lucid.

      nice sig. by the way

Either try another method, or you are not correctly reality checking.

And, if you are reality checking, try quite a few. Do one that plays on the advantage of familiar ground. For example, when I plug my nose I can't breathe, my hands always look normal, and I can't push one through the other. However, I always wear a watch. (I even have a watch tan. What a nerd I am. ) Anyways, the reality check with the watch works really well. I'll look down and it will say 11:04. Look down again, and it's 7:19. Other common symptoms are: Timing going by REALLY fast (hours in a matter of seconds, on my watch of course), upwards of 20 different digits on the face, or when it says random things. One time, it said "sex". Underneath that, the time was "00:XX". So, try every reality check you can find until one works for you. By the way, nice to see my signature is getting around. I got it off of youtube, but as far as I can tell, I was the first one with it on Dreamviews. You're the second person I've seen who's copied it. Help spread the internet rock revolution!
