      Reality check failiure =P

the other night , 1 or 2 nights ago , i cant remember , i was dreaming , and in that dream, i can remember looking at my hands , and seeing my normal amount of finger's , it was unusual , because mostily i always have more fingers in a Dream , and this time , i sort knew i was dreaming , but i couldnt spark it because well... i only had 5 finger's which is normal, and i kept trying to make one appear , but it didn't work , so it sorta carried on into a normal dream...

So is this usual sometimes? should i learn to do other reality checks? Because looking at my hands is the only reality check i do

Sorry for the unusual amount of comma's lately i have been an addict on putting them everywhere =)

Do the nose pinch test. Yes, sometimes RCs fail. It's okay. But yes, do multiple tests. For me, the breathing test has never failed.

When doing reality checks, it's important to mentally reality check first and foremost. Ask yourself these questions in every RC: How did I get here? What just happened not too long ago? Does everything around me seem to make sense?

Also, try paying attention to detail while in a dream. For example, on two of my lucid dreams, I noticed that proportion and details (like the creases on my knuckles) were more distorted than anything like extra fingers, missing nails, etc.

Sorry it took me so long to respond.

Um, not that isn't necessary. If you are able to breathe then you are WITHOUT A DOUBT dreaming. Close your mouth and pinch your nose, then try to breathe. In real life it is impossible, but in a dream all things are possible. You don't have to ask questions; sometimes you will be aware you are dreaming without having to do RCs or ask questions. But it's always best to be on the safe side, less you try to do something dangerous and get hurt in real life. Have fun!

      Been there, done that.

My hand eventually started looking normal in my dreams too right down to the six tiny prongs on my engagement ring. So I moved on to the nose pinch test and eventually that too failed (ie I couldn't breathe even though I was dreaming). I've read of this happening to other experienced LDers on here too.

Now, thanks to the advice of someone who has been lucid dreaming for 25 years and has hour long lucid dreams on a regular basis I wear a digital watch and use that coupled with looking around and considering whether my situation makes sense. It hasn't failed me yet.

So if you're serious about continuing with the hobby I would skip the nose pinch phase.

I too had this experience. I read a post that someone said their pinch test failed them. With this thought apparently on my mind I went to sleep. I was having a very frightening dream and determined that what was going on couldn't be real. I decided I must be dreaming and decided to do a breathing test. I could barely breathe and determined I must be awake. Since then I haven't had any problems and it hasn't failed for me. It didn't fail me then, it was weak and I was scared.
