A trick for getting into sleep paralysis

Hey, I'm no expert or anything... but last night I tried going into a WILD, I didn't get past, or fully to the sleep paralysis part... for the simple fact that I really really had to go to the washroom (I gotta stop drinking right before bed). I was about 3/4 paralyzed, but to finish it off, I kinda needed to stop paying attention to it and go into more of a trancelike state, which I was trying to do but I kept getting disrupted cuz I had to go really badly . But anyway, what I noticed though, that helped speed up the SP, was imagining myself moving. For example, I would be lying in bed, and I would imagine myself lifting my right arm, and then my left arm, and then my legs, and I'd just move them around. I also imagined going swimming (this worked the best), and I tried to focus a lot of attention on the sensation of my arms and legs moving in the water. I'm not sure why, but this really helped.. I think it got my attention off what my body was actually doing, and perhaps it sped it up because my body was "afraid" that I would actually start swimming? Do you know what I mean. SP is in place so that you don't move around in dreams... perhaps if you imagine yourself already moving, the body might try to go into it quicker. That's just an idea behind it, regardless, the thing helped quite a bit.

Also I noticed that it could get mildly discomforting as you're feeling yourself "harden", not too bad (or at least it wasnt too bad the 3/4 of the way there that I got). But I sort of came up with this technique that helps get you into more of a trancelike state and takes your mind off the feeling - count one number for every breath in and imagine a wave rushing up overtop of you from your legs to over your head, then on the out breath (dont count) imagine the wave retreating and flowing back over your body. You actually start to feel the wave pretty forcefully, and you can feel the energy moving through your body too! It's pretty neat.

If these are actually things I shouldn't be doing (and are reasons that I didn't complete the sleep paralysis, on top of the needing go to the bathroom badly), then please correct me... but they just seemed to be helping, so I felt like sharing them.

      Cheers,
      Dylan

thats a spiffy technique ya got there. im gonna try it tonight (havnt had any luck with SP yet)

seems alot like a technique i read for astral projection where you imagine "vibrations" (or your 'waves') flowing up and down the body as you breathe.

sounds good to me.... nice job
One should practice walking in circles.

Sounds very similar to something I do... never really thought of it the way you explain it though

I just read another technique somewhere. You do this to relax though, just after you lie in bed. You get into a comfortable position, and then tense and untense your body starting from your feet all the way up to your face. Focus on all the tiny parts as well and do them separately, moving up your body as you go. So for example, for your head, try to focus on tightening and untightening first your throat, then your jaw, then your lips, etc. I'm not sure how long you should hold them for, but I'd assume something between 3-6 seconds.

I haven't done this yet. I'm actually about to go try RIGHT NOW! *cross fingers*

      Cheers,
      Dylan

Without too much more work, you'll have a self hypnosis technique, btw
The part about working your way around your muscles and relaxing them, sounds similar to a self hypnosis trick I use

Well, imagine you're lying down right at the ocean with your feet pointing towards the water... now just imagine a wave flowing over you, and then subsides, and flows over you another time. Or basically. Nighthowl, perhaps I could draw a diagram if you still dont get it .

      Cheers,

Oh that reminds me of some near the boarder(SP) experiences ive had to. To lie in an comfertable position, which can get very uncomfertable after a while , and then imagine walking out of the body or something. I focused on one step at the time, that brought my attention away from my physical body, while i walked sideways into the wall. I didnt feel the wall or anything but i felt apart from the body, before i thought of the body and could again feel my limbs. I had really forgotten that. Il try something like that tonight again!

The technique with tensing and un-tensing is a relaxation technique called ‘progressive relaxation’ from Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming. It involves deep breathing and relaxation, slowly relaxing all the major muscles in the body, as well as the mind at the same time.

Sounds cool, Im gonna try it. I get the same feeling with breathing, where every breath is like a wave going thru your body, Its really cool feeling.

You guys can do WILDs successfully right? In order to get to the dream do you have to go thru SP first?, will you always lose sensation of your body and awareness of your surroundings before actually dreaming?
Or can you go right into a dream without feeling sleep paralysis?

I always feel SP first, but sometimes at the same time as HI, and some mini dreams

Yeah, this also reminds me a trick i used when i was starting. But moving only the arms or legs aint as empowering as imagining yourself walking out of your bed/couch/floor/etc you walk out, and as you move, imagine ll the details around you. If you are familiar with the surroundings it wont be hard and if you practice this technique along with the WILD, in no time you will "shift" (i cant think of another word which can describe better the transition) your conscience into your imaginated body, then into a semi lucid dream, in which you can increase lucidity with the variuos techniques detailed elsewhere
try this, its a very easy way to get to know the WILD technique for begginers and experts alike.

OK cool, this reminded me of something I haven't tried in a few years, but it used to work uber swell for the induction of SP. BTW Dylan thanks for posting your technique. I'll try it and get back to the forum on my results.
Aight. I used to be big into the concept of the astral body(don't know where I lost my enthusiasm, probably college), but my technique was to lie flat on my back, imagine my astral person mirrored in my physical person, and then construct through visualization a large wheel/gear, copperish in color, descending into my forehead. The idea I guess was that I was invading my space with the astral. Those same popular waves of energy, like painless electric shocks, were always the first signs that the tech was working. However, at the time, I did not know what SP was and it frightened me. Too make it simple, just imagine a huge wheel/gear slamming vertically into and through your face, yes it sounds a bit brutal, but it worked for me. It's kinda like counting sheep except you're marking the turns in the wheel/gear. It brings the sleep state on relatively more rapidly than "staring into your eyelids". The primary point though, I believe, is not to reach SP, but to rather intercept the stage between waking and SP. This can be tricky, but any measure of visualization can bring it about. Everyone is wired differently, so this tech might not work for some. -Torch
