      It's different for everyone.
I had my first lucid a couple weeks after I started recording my dreams, and my second almost a month after that.

Like no-Name said, it is different for everyone. Some people it takes several months to have their first lucid. I personally became lucid within the first week. Once you start getting lucid, it'll get easier and easier as you keep working at it. Good Luck to you!

I never kept a dream journal. I was always concerned about someone reading it. They'd send straight to jail if people found out the things i dream about, specially when I'm lucid, haha.

I came into this thread to wonder about the peculiar wording. What is controlling "half your dream"? Half of all dreams?

Being able to control some parts of your dream, almost all, but not quite.

i never have kept a dream journal and have never had any real trouble controlling my dreams, although it did take me quite a while to have my first LD, several months of practice eventually allowed me to begin having them via the MILD method with regularity. so in answer to your original question, i have never written down a dream.
