Have these experiences exactly the same. The part where you suddenly realise that you're awake again after that "wave" (or like mental lapse I think) was used in a guide I read that used this point to start trying to focus on tactile sensations (like I usually feel that I'm on a water bed) to get into a lucid dream.
Interesting, I've been trying to do the same. I usually imagine a scenario, and focus on the sensations of anything nearby. Such as holding and swinging a bat, feel of my cellphone in my hand, water bottle, etc.
