there are a number of ways of approaching a wild, from counting, to visualization, to throat chackra focusing and so on. the only thing i can really suggest is really to try them all and see which one works best for you... well, not all, but as many as you can some work for some people, some don't... it depends on too many things to just know what's wrong (stress level, ability to just fall asleep "on command", ability to visualize, etc)...
if you don't have "Exploring The World of Lucid Dreaming" give that a shot (there's an online version floating around the internet, but for under 7$ you might as well save yourself the stress on the eyes and get the book, it's VERY VERY VALUBLE if you're planning to go deeper into the topic.) Anyway, the book has LOTS of techniques you can use... Or i mean you can just search the net and pick up techniques you like.
for "first timers" the one that worked best for me has been a counting one... it's basically a wake back to bed (as you're doing, wake up after 6 hours of sleep or so) WILD, where you just count. Whenever you lose track of where you were, you do a reality check. It sounds stupid and too easy to be true, but it worked miracles for me back in september (since then i've been too busy with school and lately it's just been a dry spell... not that i've been trying that hard either, i'm just having fun with tech toys )
