Question How have a lucid dream, when you can't dream at all in the first place?

I've got all possible techniques hard-wired in my brain but my problem is dreaming in the first place. For the past week (Easter holiday) I've been waking up every day at 5am and go back to sleep till past noon on several occasions. I have had a a few non-lucid, no control dreams but they were very faint and the whole time I felt my real body and knew I was lying in bed. It was more like day dreaming in bed.

Every time so far I've forgotten my dreams (or "thoughts" really) completely before having a chance to record it. Yesterday though I had a pretty typical dream where I escape a prison and continue evading life-threatening situations and being caught thanks to supernatural abilities. When I get into a situation when by blood pressure gets slightly higher, like close to being caught or even attempting to gain control of the dream, I instantly wake up and feel frustrated as hell.

      tl;dr
Any tips on landing a nice, solid REM dream that I can take over through DILD, MILD etc.?
Any way to calm down in-dream so you don't get excited and wake up; or else sleep like a rock so it doesn't happen?

Sorry if something similar was posted somewhere else before.
P.S. WILD doesn't work with me.

Well if you can't remember your dreams in the first place the best course of action would be to spend a week or two focusing on Dream recall. Everyone dreams, and yes, I often get a feeling that these 'dreams' I just had were actually daydreams, (I wake up at 5 too) however, I know they weren't.

Course of action: Simply lie in bed and genuinely ask yourself, What was I dreaming. You probably won't get anything for 20 seconds to 3/4 minutes, but when you do, I usually find it rewarding. At first I woke up briefly and said was I dreaming? Can't remember? Sleep, OM NOM BED, but after a few days I started waking a little more at 5 and really remembering things. Make sure the Dream journal is RIGHT beside your bed, so your ready to right things down. If you forget too quickly after remembering you could try writing down some key words and notes and expand from there later (I write mine when i remember them, I dont use notes) but if you keep forgetting just sit/lie/stand there and ask "Why was I doing that?" "And before/after that?", I find it will keep coming to me until a certain point where I can never remember much passed.

Before moving to LDing you should work on the recall first. I've known and 'pondered' about LDs for a long time now, but I've only found the willpower to attempt it properly recently. I think I just felt silly writing in a journal lol.

Hope that was helpful, If anymore veteran members want to correct anything or just say STFU you don't know what your talking about go ahead

EDIT: Especially with WILD. I wouldn't reccomend trying that for a while, alot of newbies (me) try WILDing first and the lack of success seems to throw them off. Its basically overenthusiasm and eagerness, it will take time and some effort, however I plan on learning MILDs first.

Well there is no way your not having dreams unless you were inebriated the whole time (or on certain meds that inhibit REM sleep). But I agree with Paraknight you need to work on dream recall. Your brain puts dreams into your short term memory and that's why we forget them (also why smoking weed can be bad for recall... not saying you do) You need to train your brain to understand you want dreams in your longterm memory. Try to remember dreams from your childhood and think about those. What made them special enough to be in your longterm memory. And write down any dreams you have. Always remain positive or else your subconscious picks up on your negativity
