I have not been able to project without headphones. My first successful projection, and all so far, have happened when listening to a noise interference track a user here recommended. I use earbuds on my MP3 player, volume low.
I can tell you this much... I did try a similar method once and was unable to leave my body. It sounds as if your body was not asleep. Your body must be relaxed, paralyzed, and asleep in order to consciously project, as far as I understand it. The Lucidology vids will teach you how to put your body to sleep.
Are you doing this in a chair, on a sofa, or in your bed? I use a recliner so I am on my back, in as comfortable position as I can get. This is what I recommend, or alternatively a sofa or comfy chair, somewhere you don't normally associate with sleep. That will aid you with your headphone issue. If you are sitting back in a recliner you aren't lying sideways on a bed messing up the headphones.
I would like to learn more you you initiate your random projections. Would you detail everything you do?
