In about a month, when I get back from a family vacation, I am going to try and stay up as long as possible.

At some point, if I stay up long enough, I will start hallucinating, sort of like, what it's like to be in Sleep-Paralysis, except without the paralysis affect.

Why am I doing this? Well it's summer and I just want to see what it's like. Right now I'm on about 30+ hours of no sleep, and it's not a big deal. Once in a while, if I'm sitting down, I'll just zone out while trying to look at something and have thoughts race through my mind and feel slightly fuzzy. Easy to snap out of though. I'll get to about 38 hours, then I'll pass out on a plane ride.

But, I just want to ask in advance, has anyone tried this before?

Sleep depravation is dangerous and stupid. There are a lot of risks involved (pyschological and physiological) and it's just an idiotic thing to do PERIOD. Why do you want to do it? For the halluscinations? For being 'way extreme'? Whatever it is, you have some other problems other than having to not fall asleep.

Yeah I agree with yatahaze sleep deoravation can be dangerous and could cause pyschological side effects, so just be careful I think its only dangerous if you have been with out sleep for atleast a week though.

What your trying to do does sound interesting though.

I also agree. If you really want to do it, lock yourself in a place where there is no one. You have no idea how dangerous this can be. At least, if you are alone, you won't risk injuring or even killing someone in a rage brought on by an acute delusional event. You can get into serious trouble if you experience a psychotic break brought on by sleep depravation.

I totally agree. Not only does sleep deprivation cause hallucinations, it is also life-threatening. Studies show that lab mice eventually died after being subjected to long term sleep deprivation.

Besides, haven't you all seen the movie The Machinist? Actually I haven't but I know what's it about. Literally a "waking" nightmare!

I actually think this is a stupid idea, giving up sleep?

It has been proven that losing your REM state can cause memory loss. Also I believe you can only survive 11 days without sleep.

      Just be carefull!

I think it's only possible to die by using drugs to keep the mind awake, otherwise you just collapse into sleep before dieing, but even without it can cause serious psychological problems.

Can' say I haven't considered trying it just to see how long I could go, but it really probably isn't a great idea.

I don't think he will be able to last long enough for it to get dangerous anways. Right now, at 30 hours, thats a day plus a little. That's really only not sleeping for 1 night, which isn't going to kill you. Even if he reaches.... say 60 hours, thats only not sleeping for 3 nights.

I've had my share of difficulties falling asleep at night. Sleep is a state where we heal and stock up on energy for the next day. The good news is there are more efficient substitutes for sleep, I'm not sure whether it will compromise your experiment or not. People do it regularly, there was even one Vietnamese person who has been so traumatized since the 1970s (from the war) that hasn't slept for 30 years.

Also, I think Yatahaze's post would be correct if "Sleep deprivation" were replaced with "Listening to Yatahaze".

Actually in the experiment involving the mice who died from sleep deprivation, no drugs were used, they just roused the mice every time they got close to falling asleep. But yeah, without something actively keeping you awake, you would (most likely) just collapse into sleep.

So let me get this straight, you're going to deprive yourself of sleep for as long as possible because you believe it will somehow resemble sleep paralysis? I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.

      If this:

I would not recommend doing that. You can get seriously hurt pshycologically and physically from sleep deprivation. You can die too. Your idea sounds extremley idiotic to me. Imagine if you went crazy on a plane and tried to kill someone on there. You would be in deep shit.

      Eh... no.

I said I wanted to get the hallucinations of SP - I've never hallucinated during SP, not the paralysis effect. If I want SP, I'll just do it at 4am because I'm pretty good at doing that.

At 30+ hours I began to lose my attention span. I would look at something, and zone out and have thoughts race through my head like a very fast daydream. The plane ride was hours 37-45, like that's long enough for me to have a breakout and kill someone.

At 40+ hours I began to get headaches, and slightly laggy vision, also felt like I was slightly buzzed from alcohol. Attention span getting worse.

At 50+ hours heachaches began to get worse. Started seeing movements at the corners of my eyes, and my balance started getting thrown off. Daydreams are very vivid.

Anyway, I got to about 60 something hours (I couldn't sleep on the plane, I hate flying), but I wasn't really hallucinating. I had really laggy vision, and a terrible heachache, started seeing things out of the corners of my eyes, and just crashed. I laid down just for a second, and was out, woke up 12 hours later. So I'll just keep it at that and not give it another attempt because...

It wasn't very fun past 40+ hours That's when the headaches started.

I know it's not a good idea to do it, but lately I've been averging 11 hours of sleep a day, so figured I might as well give it a go. I wasn't planning to go over 3 days of sleep anyway. I know I'm not capable of doing the insane and going over 100 hours or something, I don't have the will power to. I've had friends stay up 72+ hours because of finals week in college, so I had guidance of what it would be like up until then. I didn't go blindly into this.

Anyway, the only side-effect I may have had was that I may have sleepwalked for the first time in my life (and this was 2 days after ) last night, not sure if I was, but I'll find out soon. It also may heve been due to other reasons.

And for those of you wondering, I had 0 recall when I fell asleep, and now Im back to the usual dreams 2-3 I can recall per day before my mind erases them. (since I don't keep a DJ)
