First off: I've place this Topic because Dancing does true Magic to me. And I didn't see another board suitable for it.

When I dance to Music, Especially Ska, Reggae, Dub, Drum N Bass and GOA It is like my Heart pops open and is just filled with a soulstorm of Love and Joy. I've been attempting meditation to reach such enlightenment: But nothing can do such mentally healing Magic to me as Music does: Especially when I dance to it.

I become truely entranced and afterwards I feel as if it did more good than a 1000 years of therapy would.
I do it everywhere. Play Ska...In the middle of the Dessert and I'll start skanking to it. Or alone in my room I'll be Skanking in the Early morning. Reggae and Dub do somehwat the same to me when I dance to it.

Anyone else who has found such profound mental healing in Dancing?
If not for Music and Dance then I'd be dead: Seriously.

I'm planning on Dancing alot before bedtime to lift my mood, calm my (ADHD)mind and tire my (ADHD)body. I noticed that I slept as good as I have never before on Lowlands festival after having gone totally berzerk dancing on Ska and Reggae. I was sleeping on a mat in a tent: so It wasn't like the warmest and softest bed ever. yet I slept like a King.

I wonder what the results shall be if I dance dance dance tonight some 30 minutes before starting my ''bedtime ritual'' and eventually laying down to sleep.

Any reflections, Reactions and likewise thoughts on Dance and it's effects on the Mind: Share it with us.

I don't think I have reached the level of enlightenment that you have. But I have noticed that music is like medicine for my spirit. Sublime calms me when I am stressing. High energy/upbeat music makes me feel better when I'm depressed. Certain trancy ambient songs help me relax and meditate. As far as dancing I think it could be a combination of the music and exercise that makes you feel better. You know how when you meditate the goal is to sorta clear your mind? I think when you dance your mind is focused abstactly - you are only feeling the beat and moving muscle to it so in a way it can be like meditating. Then of course any kind of healthy exercise is good for body and sould as well. :yumdumdoodledum:

98% of my time I'm either smoking Pot or I'm still stoned from the last fat ass Joint. If you're one of the 2% that has never tried smoking Pot and think you are Noble and More worthy, Intelligent, Sharp or in any way better than me for staying ''pure'' go non-stop Masturbate yourself into a Coma: it's the Closest you'll ever get to being High and Stoned. that's hilarious! have you always had that there?

Yeah when I dance it feels sooooo incredibly Liberating. It's like my Heart speaks through my Body like no other way can do so intensely

The Sufis -- Twirling Dervishes -- and such also found Music, Dancing, Poetry and such as thoroughtly integral to their Spiritual Path.

I once had an old Sufi Treatise on different rhythmic timing sequences and how they would effect one spiritually and emotionally. They thought a lot about it.

Most, maybe all, Sufis will tell you that they are Islamic Spiritual Orders, but actually they have a huge history of being persecuted by the Muslims (i.e. they have to say their are Muslims or they get killed), but history shows us that the Sufi Orders predate Islam and go back into Zoroastrianism, the World's most complete and perfect Religions, which makes us wonder that it has become almost forgotten and culturally fosselized. But it is their Religious Orders that have sworn upon Music.

Oh, and I almost forgot, their are now many Sects in India that believe in Music. The Hare Krishna people are the most well known for it, but The Sathya Sai Baba People and the Sidha Yoga People now under the lovely Gurumayi Chidvilasananda but years ago under good old Guru Muktananda -- they think music is quite enough to put them into an ecstatic spiritual trance. Indeed, I used to drum for them.

The Hara Krishna people will dance, but the other traditions will rather sit down and sway to it. I suppose it can be an age difference thing. Dancing is REALLY for the young where old people can well derive every benefit from music while sitting down and lightly tapping the feet.

Yeah I totally LOVE Sufi's Music and their Entrancing dancing Rituals. You know I should have a DVD of an Endless Sufi dancing Ritual with the Entrancing music. I could feel enchanted just by watching them dance with their heads turning left and right, their skirts swirling and them chanting together synchronically.

Man I really need such a DVD I'd be watching it for hours and dance along with them in front of my screen
I actually have alot of Dervish Music on my PC. Along with Jewish/Chassidic Folk, Arab and Persian folk: very enlighting and dancable music. HAD actually, because my PC comitted suicide not long ago and deleted all my music -_-.

Yet nothing does it to me more than Ska, Dub and Reggae.

And GOA of course. It is the most entrancing dance music. It was MADE for it haha. Yet it may be no wonder why my Forum-Alias is SKA.

It depends on my Mood. Reggae and Dub makes me feel very mellow and close to nature, while Ska just brings about an explosion of Joy, Speedy Trance and love, GOA is pure magic that I dance to when I'm already in that twilight-state of Mind to stimulate it even more so.

I have yet to find the people that breathe a good vibration. Most people around me are to shallowminded to feel that wonderfulll vibe the way I do. They only ''kinda dig it'' :/

Oh and Zoroaster, the persian Prophet, isn't forgotten. Not by people like me who are into the most ancient cultures and Spiritualities of the Middle East like me I read he was actually GREEK and named Zarathustra. What about that? Spose you know Leo?

Man, I never really tried dancing... I only really ever do it when I have to, sounds fun. I might try dancing to different types of music, and see which one lifts the depressive curses (sadness, boredom.. etc.) off me, and makes me feel over the moon. Wish me luck! -Stoat

good luck stoat!
---

i used to think i hated dancing, because i thought of it as ballroom steps, or waltzes, or drunken gyrating at shitty bars to shitty music.

but true dancing is almost an orgasmic spiritual experience for me. i far prefer it to sitting meditation.

though it is VERY difficult to dance spontaneously, as a geniune reaction to the musical vibrations... becoming a conduit, instead of a robot trying to manipulate itself into combining pre-determined "moves" in scarcely new sequences.

certainly still learning to dance.

mars volta's "deloused in the comatorium" is one of my favourite cds to dance to.

or as you mentioned, GOA.

-----

have any of you ever tried dancing to silence?

"i" only managed it once, and it was profound.
so subtle and releasing and energizing.
as if the entire universe were soaking through your skin and bones like they were no more than a permeable plasma membrane.

keep on dancing y'all!

I agree. Dancing does help me a lot. It gives me focus, yet not an 'overwhelming focus'. It makes me change whatever I was thinking/feeling previously, whether it is through powerful lyrics or strong music. I am more of a funk lover though...<3 the funk.

I love dancing. I even find myself doing it in my dreams, often. There is nothing like being able to really move with confidence to the music, as opposed to simply gyrating your body aimlessly in hopes of simply staying in time.
Right now I'm learning a mixture of popping, locking, floor-gliding and liquid-pop. I'm also planning to pick up Salsa and breakdancing a little later. Glowsticking is actually a great experience, provided you are fluid and creative enough to not only produce astounding visual variations, but also stay on time with, and progressing in style with, the music. (which many so-called "ravers" simply aren't.
I dance mostly to club-type hip-hop, old school/nu skool/electronic/ambient breakbeats, funk (yes. Gotta love the funk.) and basically whatever else moves me. Those would be the most prevalent, though.
But yeah. Dancing. Nothing like it. There is absolutely nothing I can find myself getting lost in, more than music.

Nope, can't say that I have. I'm really selective with my ska, only because I'm so foreign to it. There is some of it I like, but I've never even heard of skanking. Sublime's got some pretty good ska, and I know of, say, Reel Big Fish and the Bosstones and whatnot, but that's about it.
