So i have a question on meditation. I know alot of you probably get tired of this question, i feel the same way about when ppl ask if they were lucid in a dream but would one effect of meditation be your body feeling like a robot, like if you open your eyes and try to move but you move very slowly, And do you get some what of a body high? like your body feels too good to move?

I'm no expert but I don't think so. Audio Dharma is a good website, it's got loads of free (Buddhist) meditation lessons to download.

your talking about an advanced state of meditation, that sadly most people don't get to experience. although there are things like you described like the body high. almost immediatly after i started meditation and i could sit there for about 30 minutes, i could experience some different level of consciousness.

at the most basic form of meditation. your simply trying to control your breath and keep your mind clear of outside thoughts and focusing on your breath, and the most important part next to learning to relax is being able to hold your chosen posture, for an extensive length of time.

some people even direct their breath and follow it down into their exhales down into their stomach (belly breathing, so i've heard it called). but that's more of a type/style of meditation. to elaborate a bit more on belly breathing. from one theory i was told, it's that when we are children we breath from our stomaches (sounds crazy...i know) and eventually we re-learn breathing and simply breathe through our lungs.

it's not that you are actually breathing through your stomach (duh), it's that you are using all of your body to help your body breathe more clearly. But i don't really want to get into this subject too much because it's also a part of qi-gong and supposedly people can burn out their qi, which can have dire consequences (so i'm told).

but that's just one of the many methods.

the benefits of meditation: reduced stress, relaxed state of mind...some people also say that they're more able to think clearer, as they are not being controlled by their "learned self" but are "enlightened" (in a lesser sense of the word as described by meditation).

back to the question at hand by dropout14.

Yes. there's all kinds of experiences that feel quite different. But most people experience them differently. I've felt that when i really dig into meditation for a couple hours. I feel euphoric and the world (outside especially) looks alot different. i would almost describe as a mild LSD trip, vissually. but it's quite calming.

i personally do buddhistt meditation with the guidelines originated from india/tibet (not to be confused with japanese styles). i would assume that any style of meditation is just a different path to the same top of the mountain. some of them are of course stranger than others. khundalini jumping out at me in that sense. i've never had the open mindedness to learn about chakra's and the like.

enough of my ranting though. There's tons of places to get the info you need to get started. i dunno if i'm allowed to post URLs. but one thing i would recommend agianst is buying any generic meditation books. Probably with some jackass on the cover in lotus position, with huge font, and an easy read on the inside.

WHY? because meditation can be quite an in depth process and probably 99.9% of the meditation books out there are so simplified. you could probably guess the process that they write about. plus you can find 10x more information online for free.

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meditation (it seems they removed alot of the external links at the bottom...too bad they were pretty good too. either way. it'll take alot of sifting but here's tons of helpful info. please be aware. that almost EVERY single religion has meditation. So if your like i was, you don't have to worry if it's agianst your religion/moral beliefs, because ALL of the major religions have meditation in them.)

This will answer some of what you asked...

Then I start saying a mantra. "Aum" is a historically popular one and a sacred one to the Hindus. I think it in my head in the sound it would have if I said it out loud. I do not hum it like some people, the ones you might see in the movies who do it out loud. I almost effortlessly think it. I don't fight other thoughts, which are inevitable. I just gently drift toward the mantra. I do this for 20 minutes. When I look at my watch briefly and see that it has been 20 minutes, I stop. If it has been almost 20 minutes, I estimate when I reach 20 minutes and stop. As soon as I stop, I calmly open my eyes. Then I just sit there for a few minutes and enjoy the peace, which is often mind expanding euphoria. It works best when I open my eyes and see open land, water, or sky. It is recommended that you do this twice a day, at least six hours apart. They say that for best ongoing results, you should do your second one within 12 hours of your first one of the day. Doing it here and there seems to be good too. You are supposed to wait at least 30 minutes after a meal to do it.

      * Having certain mind altering drugs in your system wrecks the effects. The clean euophoria is greatly inhibited by drugs like marijuana. But doing it while on mushrooms is highly recommended by some people. It works best when your system is working well, i.e. when you are eating right and in shape. While we're on the topic, marijuana in your system is a big enemy to lucid dreaming success also.

I have never felt like I had a hard time moving. It has never made me feel like a robot. I do get an intense body high most of the time. Transcendental meditation causes the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain killers. For me, coming out of a meditation is like a shot of heroin laced with coherent acid, except it is good for me and clears my head. I meditated earlier today and came out of it feeling so high I wanted to just sit there for about 30 minutes (although the major high only lasts about two to three minutes). Also note that I highly recommend having visual perception of open land or water and a view of the sky when you come out of transcendental meditation. For some reason, it really enhances the experience for me.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

You know universal mind, in buddhist meditation they use mala beads. Most people seem to think that it's just a sign of their chosen religion, indicating a monk or something. But there's 108 of the beads in the entire necklace and it was originally used as a timing device. so as you completed each mantra, you would move on to the next bead until you moved through them all and that's how they would know when their meditation was complete.

I'm not trying to convert you or anything (i'm not even a buddhist). I just thought it might be able to help you know when your meditation was done, as opposed to checking the clock constantly.

My euphorria tends to last a bit longer than that personally. i'd estimate around 10 - 15 minutes.

Do you keep your eyes closed the entire time? Because i've found that when you get finished with your meditation. that if you keep your eyes closed the entire time (which i'm sure most do.. but you never know)
that the simple fact that your eyes have to re-adjust to the light. it gives another level to the "enlightened" state after finishing.

Just thought i'd throw out those suggestions the first one though is majorly important to me as i HATE not being able to take my time with meditation and constantly watching the clock is a sure way (for me) to loose my state of mind.

EDIT: oh and if you two (dropout & nikolaa) would like some more examples of the benefits of meditation. i have what i would consider a pretty healthy library of books on the subject and would be more than happy to look some of them up and post them here.

      and as you can tell i love my parenthesis...so () ( )

Actually, meditation is meant to be a kind of medicine......a medicine for worldly problems
