Well they had strangely accurate calenders but they had to end the calendar some time right.

Who knows though and if those aliens or end of the world come on Dec 21 2012. but WTF would they come all of a sudden on the christian calendar? Surely they have their own ways of keeping time and dont use this flawed system based on when a mythical jew was born.

I think Aliens are highly unlikely. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. That being said, the Mayans WERE amazing mathmeticians who created an incredibly accurate calendar that goes back about 5,000 years.

The Mayans saw all of creation as a series of repeating cycles within cycles. The biggest cycle, what they call the "Long Count" is calculated to end, or more precisely REPEAT on December 21, 2012.

This date, contrary to what our friend dragonoverlord seems to think, has nothing to do with the Christian calendar. It couldn't be any more "pagan." December 21 is the winter solstice and has been marked by Man since time immemorial to be the time when things "start".

As the Earth revolves around the sun, after the Winter Solstice, the days begin to get longer. For many early and indigineous peoples, this marked the change from a time of death/sleep to a time of awakening/rebirth.

The year 2012 and the whole numerology of the 12/21/12 thing, I believe is simply a coincidence. Of course, there are those who believe that NOTHING is a coincidence and who am I to argue?

As for what will happen? I doubt that if there is any kind of spiritual or mystical change that it will be anything we will notice.

I'm convinced that there is life out there somewhere. MSNBC says "the universe is at least 156 billion light-years wide" - That was 3.5 years ago however.
Wikipedia: "... at least 93 billion light years across" - No citation though.

Considering the incomprehensible size there's must be a pretty good chance (not of them coming to earth necessarily but of other life existing).

I can't disagree. Life - even sentient life - outside our own existence seems almost certain. I am still dubious that said sentients have visited Earth: either the Mayans OR the Egyptians. ...in spaceships anyway.

As far as I know, two things will happen on the same date (coincidentally?).

      1) We are in an integlacial period induced because the Earth is "wobbling" through space, just like a spinning top slowing down. On 21/12/12 the wobble is supposed to change direction, and we start very slowly falling into another ice age (unless global warming is real!).

      2) Our solar system and thus the earth will line up on the equatorial axis of the Milky Way and pass through.

One of them (the first one I think) is supposed to happen every 26,000 years, and so far Earth's survived all of them.

Yes, apparently the Maya did predict all this.

I reckon that both of those things will happen, we'll notice absolutey nothing and continue with our everyday lives.

I'd like to think something big and enlightening would happen, and if it did I would be delighted (or dead, maybe), but I just don't think all these alien and armageddon theories hold ground. They have a great place in my fantasies though.

Do I even beleive those two things will happen? I don't know anymore, the media are screwed up and who the hell can we trust?

well, drawing from my knoledge of what the mayans did to themselfs,if aliens had visted earth, they were probably playthings, maybe being watched for a intersteler reality tv show.also, who in there right mind would build a pyramid.just think about it 65 million blocks of stone and 25 years to build for something that will obviosly be robbed? forget about it !

I have heard several theories of what will happen (if anything). Aliens coming to earth is pretty unlikely I would think.

I have heard several other scenarios including the whole magnetic pole shift and earth rotating in the opposite direction. Not sure how believable this stuff is but I also know that this is not seen as something that will destroy the planet, just maybe many of the species on it.

I saw this interesting documentary on the history channel where these guys were analyzing the Sphinx. It has evidence of erosion caused by water, which is impossible to the degree in which it has it considering it is in the desert. If this were true, it would place the creation of the Sphinx over 10,000 years ago (which is unlikely if you analyze human evolution).

So maybe, there were aliens here that created objects like the pyramids or the Sphinx. It could have also been an advanced civilization that has now been wiped out.

The Mayan calendar records a 13,000 year period, I believe.

I dunno though. It is more likely that nothing will happen.

The 26000 years thing refers to the precession of the equinoxes, but the cycle shortens as time passes and nowadays it's 25000-something.

Also, the effects brought on by the cycle come very slowly and gradually so you'd need a much longer lifespan to actually notice anything.

What i want to happen is this, its unlikely though. I want a mass alien landing which stops all wars and they help us stop the human carbon emissions, then there will be peace forever and they let us in there universal council. its far fetched but id love it to happen.

Depends on which calendar you're attributing to 'The Mayans', since it's my understanding that they lived by a Lunar Cycle Calendar. 13 months and 1 'Day out of time'

Thank you for your precision. I was keeping it simple. The Mayan Calendar was actually a system of calendars that when used in combination were as accurate as anything created within the first half of the 20th century. The Lunar cycle was definately part of that system. However there were other parts as well. They had alternating cycles of 13 and 20 days - the trecena and vientena - and there were seasonal or solar cycles too. But the overall Long Count itself had nothing to do with the solar year, you are correct.

Well I'm really looking forward to some big change on mankind. We really need some fresh new start, to heal our own scars and reconsider our position within nature.

Terrence Mckenna is still my idol. May he rest in peace.

I love his theory on Gene Swarms.

"If you were an extra-terrestrial in a starship in orbit around this planet, what you would see looking down is a gene swarm. The species that seem to us to be animal forms extremely stable in time, are actually highly permeable membranes over millennia and tens of millennia, with genes crossing over, moving around, and being basically obedient to the expression of some kind of teleological form." Terence McKenna

btw he died of Brain Cancer. Drugs may have had something to do with why he got it though.
The mixture of that and Psychedelics was probably why he had such crazy awesome trips. God knows what a massive tumor pressing on the brain might make u see.

About the aliens? Well it's a bit, how should I say, optimistic?

If we are going to "change" so significantly, I don't think it will be an easy process... for sure we'll need some global disaster due to climate change, who knows... or something like so.
