      Connecting....

i've read a few articles lately where specialists have talked about a controversial belief that mother and fetus may share dreams. some say it's more to do with the mother's physiology. for example, if the mother has a nightmare, the fetus can pick up on the mother's stress and react accordingly-such as moving around, or kicking. i am interested in this mainly because i am 6 months pregnant. i have dreams about the baby all the time, but that's normal, especially for a new mother. i was just wondering if there is any way of really connecting with the baby. and how will i know if i have made that connection or not?

I think that this is...well, slightly possible, to put it in a summary.

I would expect any baby connected to a mother by an umibilical cord to have some idea of how the mother feels. I don't think that you share dreams with your baby - the umbilical cord, if I'm right, only carries blood/food, and dosen't link to your brain in anyway. The brain is where your dreams take place, so how a baby could dream what you dreamt seems quite impossible to me.

      Instead, as you said here:

if the mother has a nightmare, the fetus can pick up on the mother's stress and react accordingly-such as moving around, or kicking.[/b]
I think the baby didn't experience the dream. The mother simply had an nightmare, sweated, moved around quickly, got stressed, heart rate increased, and the baby picked up on that (espcially the heart rate, i reckon), and wasn't too pleased about it/got scared, so did some kicking. Anything connected to another thing, sharing it's food, by an umbilical cord, and being inside the person to boot, should have some idea of when these things happen.

As for linking with the baby, or communicating with it via dreams, or what you like, I don't think that's possible. I'm no doctor, so I can't say this with certainity, but while a baby is inside you, there's no way of your brain linking with its brain or anything; so the possiblity of communication - albeit with something that really can't communicate yet, and isn't even born - should be impossible. If it was possible, I think it might be slightly distressing to a unborn baby, anyway.

very good points. the specialists in the articles were talking mostly about the mother's dreams, and how she bonds with her unborn baby through her dreams. some think this is as important as the other bonding processes that a woman goes through while pregnant. it strengthens her need to nurture the baby while it's inside her, and then once it's born.

i've heard many people on this site talk about bringing others into their dreams. i've got no experience in this, but if it is possible, i thought that it would be easier to bring in the baby, seeing as it's apart of me-we're connected. instead of someone who may not be as open to such things. i'm not talking about passing my dreams on to him exactly. i just thought that if this is possible, it would be a good bonding technique. this sounds like a good experiment for someone who has more experience in this than i do...
