What is Astral? What is travel? What travels?
Our minds are not mere matter. Our brains are matter. But our mental consciousness, awareness itself, is metaphysical ... immaterial. Very mysterious. But both matter and information can occupy
Neither do we know much about "our bodies", how they exist in the world, or the world itself. We have the very limited evidence from our own very limited perceptions. We have old ideas about souls and spirit.
And now we are beginning to have much more evidence, and theory, from the new era of modern physics, computation, etc. Today, both our theories and our observations remain limited.
But a few key structural elements / variables are becoming clearer.
1) Our world exists within a multiverse - there are almost infinite other worlds and realms.
2) Everything in the world exists in a superposition, overlapping with, other worlds.
3) Everthing in time exists, probabilistically, in both the past and the future.
4) Distant objects, information, can be "quantumly entangled", mysteriously co-determined, with each other.
5) Our consciousness itself reacts with the world, at the quantum mechanical level, to actually, physically, cause / choose the materialization of that reality
6) Information - as "form" - is not limited to time or space in the same way as is matter.
7) Our body-minds are energy and information, not mere local matter.
Really, it's just a question of facts, and rules. The facts always depend on specific circumstances, subjective and objective, near and far. So does the outcome, even the substance, of the rules.
So, what is locally possible changes over time - though change itself is impossible, at the highest level of all-in-one aggregate being.
The Egyptians believed that we had several souls with differing characteristics, more or less localized around our physical body.
Mystics seem to be saying that some coherent higher-dimensional self, with perceptions we can share, is doing the travelling. It would be travelling through the multiverse, or through higher dimensional realms therein. How it would sense, I can hardly imagine - presumably, holographically.
This hardly seems impossible. Really, we are not yet in a position to say that much of anything of this nature is impossible. Our body-mind systems are immensely complex and powerful, part of the fabric of reality itself, implying inate energies and functions that are potentially truly cosmic. And no doubt those functions can be enhanced, through practice and attention.... and ethics.
Finally, a note of caution. From old, mysticism and the search into the super-normal unknown has always been considered dangerous. One cannot reliably know or control what one will find, or unfind it thereafter. Or one might be a danger to others there, a trespasser.
Empathy, knowledge, honesty, and a queer mix of humility and conviction are still the keys.
Good luck,
PQ
