      we dont need to sleep???

i watched this programme about a drug being made for people with insomnia etc actually it was a more serious sleep disorder i cant remember the name of but they were saying how sleep is induced by a chemical in the brain that makes you slowly tired and if this drug was developed in the right way it could be used to keep everyone awake 24 7
i think the programme was horizon it was deadly serious

Why bother being awake. I dont think i could stand living 24 hours each day without sleeping. But sleep is so bound into me, all of us. Maybe the next generation. But in that case, when will they get time to defrag their minds... not to say become lucid

without sleep, im pretty sure we would all go insane..... the mind needs time to 'sort thing out' and calm down.
not to mention that it is while we sleep that our body grows the most.

i have mild insomnia, and i can't think why anyone would want to stay awake 24/7..... cause it bugs the hell out of me

Arcadia, is it this pill you was talking about?: http://www.provigil.com/physician/informat...on/summary.aspx

I don't want to try it, no.

I read a Scientific American article that said Provigil isn't really any more effective than caffeine. The trick is, while caffeine affects the entire brain (and the entire body...ever look at your veins after drinking a couple cups of coffee?) Provigil affects only the brain. You don't feel jittery or nervous at all after using it.

Still, I'd expect that there are limits. People who don't sleep start seeing shit after a few days. Provigil probably wouldn't be able to prevent that.

When I get back to the U.S., I might experiment with Adrafinil if I can get it (like Provigil, perhaps a bit worse for your liver, but about a fraction of the price because it's unpatented).

      We all need sleep sometime

I think the drug would be cool for some occasions but could people actually stand taking those drugs day after day and not feel tired after a while! They might get really tired after they stop taking the drugs because of all the missed sleep!

Simonster, Do you remember which issue Of Scientific American????

Just as any other muscle in your body needs a break, I would think your mind would follow suite.
When ciggarettes came out, people were not aware of it's side effects ....It would'nt take a rocket scientist.

sleeplessness can b fatal. the body needs rest in order to recoperate from the day, if it is deprived of this for a long enugh perid, a person can actually die from overload.

      Provigil

Of importance is the purpose of Provigil.

This drug is for those with narcolepsy, and similar sleep disorders in which individuals get too much sleep interfering with their day. They aren't to take the drug at the time sleep is normally desired, night (or day for night shift people). Provigil isn't meant to take the place of sleep, just make your awake times better when you're supposed to be awake.

screw that man. I don't trust stuff like that, not to mention, the boss would expect you to work longer hours and everything else would probably be made to last longer as well seeing as you'd have all this extra time on your hands n all. No thanks, I like sleeping anyway. It's my escape. Esp. when I have lucid dreams. I think that it would be a big mistake and it would have bad long term affects and probably bad short term affects as well. We were designed to sleep for a reason. If they were gonna make me do that they'd have to kill me first. Hell, I won't even take that new loestrin crap they have out for women now, much less some crazy drug like that. Let nature do it's thing I say.

Heh, my personal record is 4 days without sleep without caffeïne holding substances.

It was fun, as I could play videogames longer than normal.

First thing that happened when I went to sleep was two of the most vivid dreams I ever had.

I've read experiments where rats deprived of sleep die before rats deprived of food.

And who cares about money, huh? You don't say you could spend more time with family, or with friends, you say you could make more money. That's superficial...

This is a lucid dreaming forum. One would think that, perhaps, in some small fanciful way, people who have joined the forum are interested and practice the art of lucid dreaming. A logical conclusion from this, is that such people value the times when they are having lucid dreams. One has lucid dreams whilst asleep. Hence, the strangely large number of people on this lucid dreaming forum who might possibly care about sleeping.

As Howietzer was saying there is most likely some side effects that just have not been found yet. Such as shortened life span, because u are awake more. u would be awake and living for the same amount of time but your hours of sleep would be less, so it would even out to less years alive. But thats just a thought and maybe when I'm older my children will never sleep and I will have to deal with everything and everyone 24 7. click click :shoots self in head:

Sixty-four-year-old Thai Ngoc, known as Hai Ngoc, said he could not sleep at night after getting a fever in 1973, and has counted infinite numbers of sheep during more than 11,700 consecutive sleepless nights.[/b]

Drugs are for babies, 11,700 nights without sleep amazing. That would be so cool not going without sleep, however no lucid dreams.

haha,i know it was already pointed out in the thread, but you guys seem to have forgotten that this isnt so people can stay up all night and be awake 24/7, its so people with sleep disorders (such as narcolepsy) can stay awake throughout the day because they sleep too much.

staying awake is the easy bit. coming to terms with what it is like to be concious for days is very different. you dont see "shit" as someone put it, you just see more, for longer. i stayed awake for a while once through all 28 moon phases. that was weird. feels like your dying after a bit but you wake up two days later.
